That's a pretty interesting idea -- I think it probably has some merit. I'm not sure I necessarily agree that the "object" is to be as hipster as you can without getting called out (or maybe you mean that mostly as a joke), but I do think that within any culture or subculture, you could probably work out a "points" system that would fairly accurately predict a person's social standing within that culture.

Maybe things would be better for everyone if everyone would knock that shit off and just say what they mean, and be upfront about their intentions -- but I don't think it can work that way. There's probably some game theory that would explain why. I find it all pretty fascinating -- my girlfriend majored in sociology, and she's always telling me about this kind of stuff, and I recently started reading this book, which is, I think, kind of about the same thing.
