That's pretty much how I feel. I can function fine and chat or joke with coworkers, roommates and sometimes strangers but inside I mostly feel how I imagine other people feel when public speaking (which ironically makes public speaking easier for me than most people).
Meds helped in the past but more as a placebo, the only one I occasionally use now is Ashwaganda
Daily morning exercise and meditation help a bit bit the only effective way I've found to actually remove the anxiety rather than just suppress is to expose yourself to a situation that you find uncomfortable until it's less uncomfortable and then expose yourself to an even more uncomfortable situation until it's less uncomfortable and then repeat.

This is a good book too check out if you don't do therapy
You're not awkward, just need to figure out what your sticking points (emotional or social) are and work through them. You're gonna be forced to talk to people for the rest of your life, so might as well figure out how to get comfortable
