Pretty much what everyone else said... believe me, I've ran many laps around this question and tried several different cheap pieces of equipment. They don't work. Plain and simple. These are your options:

If you mean that you picked up an original NES controller and a USB adapter (like this one) for it then you could take it apart and clean it. I recently bought an original NES controller and had to clean mine before it would work properly. The dpads were very unresponsive when I first used it, but they're good as new now.
If it's not an authentic Nintendo NES controller then it's probably just poorly made and there's nothing you can do.

On PC I can use an Atari 2600, NES, Genesis, SNES, N64, PS1/PS2, Gamecube, XBox, PS3 (with bluetooth), Xbox 360, Wii (with blutooth), XBone (Micro USB), PS4 (Bluetooth) and Wii U Controllers as well as the the countless other 3rd party controllers.
On Xbox 360 I can can use an Xbox 360 controller.

I bought this to use whenever I travel when I still want to play on my laptop/RPi. Works flawlessly with all of my NES controllers. Ended up getting the same thing for my SNES controllers too.

It doesn't list it as being compatible with Windows 10 on the Amazon page, but I was wondering if anyone has tried it to see of it works.
not sure about N64 but this one for the NES controller and this one for the SNES controller work well for me. I know someone who uses the SNES one and can hit sub-55 Super Metroid. While it's not that impressive, it does require shortcharging and a few other tricks'n'stuff that need precise inputs. The NES one works well for Gameboy Games, I'm learning LADX with it and haven't had any issues with the skips.
I kinda suspect this thread won't get many more responses, but a cool gadget is a USB interface for your favorite flavor of old-school game controller. Then you can play using the ACTUAL old controllers.

It would really depend what you are trying to play. As a general rule it is good to have some sorta of generic or wired xbox 360/ps3 type of controller; something with analog sticks and shoulder buttons. It is better to use a controller that has more features and not use it, than have a controller with less features and need more.
I mostly play either SNES, NES or Megadrive/Genesis games, so most of the time I don't need the extra buttons. I had also previously been a retro system collector so I opted for controller adapters as I already had multiple controllers. These are the two that I use: NES, SNES. I prefer using original controllers so I would recommend that route if you can afford it. The only thing to keep in mind is that the adapters are only as good as your controllers. I had a problem with an NES controller that seemed to have delayed response time and super stiff d pad. I switched out the NES controller with another and the problems completely disappeared.

They do. Personally I use original system controllers with a usb adapter.
I have USB controller adapters for NES, SNES, and Genesis (which does Atari style controllers too) and they all work wonderfully.

I wouldn't doubt the one you posted works, but obviously I can guarantee anything.
I use this one for Genesis but it's honestly a bit pricy for what it does. You might be able to find something much cheaper that works, but I wanted the extra functionality.

Personally, I'd recommend these over the ibuffalo controllers. I haven't had good luck with those. The only issue might be tracking down the controllers but if you're willing to do that I'd go for the adapters. Nothing feels like or beats the actual hardware, IMO.
There are a lot of decent options
And if you want, you can even get an adapter for an original controller.
There's simply no reason to buy this product if you're actually into playing NES games.
