Skip the all-in-one devices.. keeping the modem and router separate is good for later down the road should you find yourself in a position to upgrade to a higher speed - or is one device goes bad you only need to replace that instead of everything..
A decent cheap modem for your speed plan would be the Zoom 5341J at about $50.
A decent cheap router, I would start out with a TP-Link Archer C2, again in the $50 range.. There are cheaper modems and routers out there but these two would somewhat future-proof you since the modem can do up to 150mbps and the router has gigabit ethernet capabilities, so going to a faster speed plan would be relatively painless equipment wise.

Bridge mode connects two routers together. Passthrough mode basically disables the cable comoany router and passes the modem directly to your router.

An Ac1200 or faster router would be better. My next home router will probably be an Asus, set one up recently for work and it was very easy and no issues.
Thank you. I didn't buy a high end router though. I actually planned to use the router I bought just to allow the devices that wouldn't connect to the Hitron to connect to wifi. I tried to use the IP Passthrough on the Hitron, unsuccessfully. I fiddled around and got the TP Link router to work just off of one of the LAN ports on the Hitron (I know that isn't wise), but then I had more issues. Eventually, I contacted Shaw and they suggested to bridge the modem. So, now I am using the new router exclusively. The improvement is impressive.
So, I guess my question is, should I consider buying a better quality router? I'm not sure if something like the R7000 would be overkill.
Can I slightly blow your budget?

If you really can't spend more than $50 then just get a router and use that as an AP. A bit more configuration, but it works fine. The Archer C2 has the same specs as that netgear repeater, has gig ports and could be re-purposed as a full router if needed.

I just asked the same question to r/HomeNetworking a few days ago. I was mainly worried about the router holding settings during because it would frequently be turned on and off. I actually picked up this yesterday from microcenter for $40 so i wont be able to confirm its longevity but so far so good. Basically any modern wifi router will do.
