Just get a Netgear CM600 or a TP-LINK TC7650, the two 24x8 models using Broadcom chips. The TC7650 is $80 on Amazon right now after a $10 coupon although it may not ship right away.
Other options use the Intel Puma 6 chipset which had latency issues which may not yet be solved.
Some folks have reported that DOCSIS 3.1 modems do work in DOCSIS 3.0 mode:

That AP is really overkill. For modem I would recommend this. I know it's EVERY OVERKILL. But for cable modems it's better to have a good one then a trashy one. Worked at a cable company for a few years I have seen modems die for no reason. The router should be fine, although the Archer C7 is starting to get long in the tooth, and I don't think it has the granular traffic control features that newer routers have. For example, I have a C7 (V4), and it doesn't come close to the options that my Asus RT-AC3200 gives for traffic control. Maybe the ASUS RT-AC68U would be a better fit, you'll have more control, especially with the Merlin WRT firmware.
The modem, I don't know why you would want an 8x4 modem. The 4 channel modems are being phased out, and depending on your plan, an 8 channel modem might not get you the full speed if your plan goes faster than 200Mbps.
At a minimum you should get a 16 channel modem, the Zoom 5370 16x4 Cable Modem is a decent modem, as is the TP-Link TC7650 DOCSIS 3.0 (24x8) High Speed Cable Modem.

First, you are making a wise decision by not renting a modem, this will be $154/year which you can invest in network devices that will easily serve you 3.
Don’t go for 2in1 devices, it might be extra work to manage 2 devices, but you will get more features and better performance. And when it breaks you just replace the broken piece and not the whole thing.

Those will total around $130, which is lower than what would your ISP charge, you might find different options / brands but if a brand never lets me down that is the one I would suggest.
Anyone know if this will work with Cox? Would this be overkill for the 150MBPS plan? I am looking to upgrade to Gigablast soon and I wanted to get my own modem and router ahead of time. I picked up a AC1900 router and AC1200 extender for the house already. Cox is recommending a 32x4 but I wasn't sure if 24x8 was even better or not the right configuration?

My own - using a R7800. I also use my own modem - a TC7650. It's basically just a rebranded CM600.
The tech's description sounds ridiculous to me. I assume you can change anything you want because once returned I'd guess they factory reset equipment before it goes back out.
Thanks, again, Leanne. I found the TC7650 on Amazon. I've also had a Hitron CDA3-35 in my wishlist for some time now, but it's Puma 6, according to this list.
I'm still leaning towards DSL, but I'll do s'more research.
