EDIT: To clarify, you need a DVI-I not a DVI-D. A DVI-I is the same as a DVI-D except it also includes an analog signal as well (for older monitors).

Just making sure, but you're using a 2200G or 2400G with no dedicated graphics card, right? If not, you shouldn't be plugging into the monitor at all. If you are, just grab a DVI-Dto VGA adapter off Amazon like this one.

I have a similar setup. If you have a similar card, you'll need adapters to make it work. You will have to use a DVI to VGA adapter.

There are passive dvi to vga adapters, however your graphics card might not support them. Check to see if your graphics card supports DVI-I or DVI-A. If it does support it then there will be no loss vs a VGA cable.

If your GPU only supports DVI-D (Digital) then you'll need a more expensive active adapter. There depending on the adapter, there will be some difference.

Since some video card manufactures do make cards with DVI-I plugs there are (for example) DVI-I to VGA adapters.

DP -> VGA is probably better in the long run, since DVI-I are already gone in all modern cards.

Your cable MUST to be plugged into the GPU itself and not the motherboard. Right now you're using integrated graphics and not your new GPU which explains the bad fps. Well, sadly looks like that's the analog only variant. There's also a separate 20M35D that'd understand a digital signal.

What you could do is grab a used GTX 960 instead somewhere, or hope their prices finally drop. The 9xx series still has DVI-I instead of DVI-D. That means we can use this adapter as an alternative. The difference is the four pins around the broad pin, they carry an analog signal.

Actually, many are powered directly off the port. Most, but not all, HDMI and DVI ports provide enough power to drive a converter. My HDMI->VGA converter is like this, although it also includes a microUSB power input.

Don't plug the monitor into the motherboard. The motherboard's onboard graphics are probably so bad that it will slow down the entire system when you try to plug in a monitor there - at least, that's what happened when I tried to plug my CRT into my motherboard.

Your graphics card is old enough that in addition to DVI-D (digital), it should have a DVI-I output, which carries both digital and analog signals. So instead of getting an active adapter and being at the mercy of their mediocre resolution support, get something like this passive adapter that allows you to take full advantage of the card's DAC.
