Do people ever experience spontaneous remission from addiction or sudden changes in life habits? Yes, and I believe that yes is uncontroversial, though the quantitative estimates vary.
Can religious conversion be one of the triggers for this? Yes, but our evidence is (to my knowledge) largely anecdotal.
Do we understand how this works? Not really, but people have theories. (Not an endorsement.)
