You can also get little "endoscopes" for about $25 on Amazon. This is a camera & LED on the end of a long stiff wire that plugs into the USB port on your smartphone. Drill a small hole, you can drop this thing in and actually see inside the wall. They're pretty simple with today's technology - not much to them. And useless on insulated walls, obviously.

They make other versions (WiFi) that I assume would work with iPhones.

Amazon sells USB boroscopes for $20. Drill a hole through the drywall and scope it out, you'll know for sure there is nothing lurking behind that wall.

Boroscope and some sort of pickup claw may be your friend in this situation.
On eBay and Amazon they sell cheap USB borescopes, and some even have magnets attached.
