If space is your problem, maybe you could invest in a good external hard drive. I have an 11" Macbook Air with a 64 GB internal SSD, but I keep all my music/movies/podcasts/ebooks on a 2TB external HDD that never leaves home. You can pick up a good one for about $89.

WB element external drive. Better reviews than the "mybook", and cheaper because it doesn't have pre-loaded software, which when re-formatted by the wiiU, will remove that software anyways.

Best value for your Wii u.

I own it. I love it.

Go for an external one like this Western Digital 2TB one. If you're going to have movies on it, it's really handy to have an external one.

he said external hardrive.. but still you're on the right track. i have this and its worked great so far. not too slow, though it's not lightning fast. also my computer is a piece of shit.. so take that into account.

Have a new pc, need to move a lot of things over. Plus want to have a backup of everything just in case. I am guessing it would be good?

BTW is this a good deal?

The problem is that my 3 old hd dont have vents, they are like this:

And I rather not "open" them just to be safe... think a fan would still help? Thanks!!

It's this drive in question, the old Elements usb2 one. The chart here says it isn't encrypted?

The enclosure itself was giving me io errors when I initially tried reading it. The only way to actually get the drive accessible by ddrescue was through direct sata.

This one is the one I use, although not for the Wii U, and it's not in the case anymore. Also, you probably won't need 2tb, but any of these should be fine. I'm sure you'll find cheaper offers, as I bought it a few years ago for about 100€.

I got a 2tb media drive with an hdmi and remote.

Edit: this is what I have. WD Elements 2 TB USB 2.0 Desktop External Hard Drive https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002QEBMCI/ref=cm_sw_r_other_awd_AanGwbR5ARM2F

Sounds like a good idea, thank you for your advice. I don't think this HDD is in a separate housing, it's this one which seems to be pretty solidly sealed off. Will try to find a guide to opening it up though because perhaps it's just an unusual form-factor.

I've got a feeling that there's a loose connection somewhere in it TBH. If it was a broken head or something like that, it would be corrupting data - but I think (see:assume) that if it was a loose connection then it would make sense that it's got a working/not-working fluctuation.

And yes, I'd managed to look after it for a good few years before he dropped a cricket ball on it. He laughed it off, but I don't think he realised he'd just knocked the life out of 2tb and 4+ years of data.

Edit: I just found this video and it looks like this might work. I don't have a SATA enclosure, but hopefully this indicates that there's some potential!

Im not sure how far the drop was (it's my Girlfriend's drive). Its a desktop version model WDBAAU0020HBK-NSEN.

Since I posted, I ran CrystalDiskInfo (relevant output below) It showed a caution on Current Pending Sector Count which, from the sidebar's flowchart, implies that I should attempt a clone. Does this change anything? I'll show this thread to the GF and see what she says.
