Well, you don't have to buy a modem. If you don't, TWC will provide you with one and charge you an extra $8 each month. So it's a little bit of an initial investment for an SB6141, but it'll pay for itself in less than a year. As far as routers, it'll depend on how many people are doing what with your wifi as to how expensive of one you'll need to get. If you just plan on streaming Netflix from one TV or device at at a time, this might suit your needs for $40. However, if you plan on streaming from multiple devices simultaneously, you might want a higher-quality router. PC Magazine reviews routers here, and as you can see, $100 is a general starting point for good routers.

Also bear in mind that the device you use to stream Netflix will have a huge impact on how well it works. I bought a Sony DVD player with built-in WiFi, and the receiver on it is so terrible that I couldn't stream anything without constant buffering. I bought a Roku 3 and haven't had a single issue in more than a year.

I have this https://www.amazon.com/N750-Dual-Router-Wireless-Accelerate/dp/B007KZQM9Q, spent $30 on it and loaded it with OpenWRT, works great and has USB ports

That's a lot of devices :)
I do not have that many, so not sure how this router will scale!

[WD My Net N750 HD Dual Band Router Wireless N WiFi Router] (http://www.amazon.com/N750-Dual-Router-Wireless-Accelerate/dp/B007KZQM9Q) -- for the price I got it for, it works great!

My devices:

  • 2 laptops (old one uses 2.4 Ghz, newer one uses 5 Ghz)
  • Asus Cube (Google TV) (uses 2.4 Ghz)
  • Tivo Roamio (uses 2.4 Ghz)
  • Smartphone (uses 2.4 Ghz)

LUS is great- very reliable. They do not care if you torrent and do not enforce data caps. I'd use them if I could but they skipped my damned road in Lafayette when doing phase 1 rollout for whatever reason. We probably won't get it at this point (they claim they are looking at backfilling missing spots in lafayette but they are more concerned with new rollouts in youngsville and broussard).

Sucks for me, but I highly suggest you use them. Also I saw you were looking for a good cheap router- I suggest one of these. They are every bit as good as those overpriced nighthawk pieces of shit (if you're reading this from behind a nighthawk, you got screwed- sorry).

Is this a decent router? And can you use your previous ISP router?
