Just replace the chain and wiring. The wiring, if it's old/original, is more troubling than the sticky chain.
It's fairly easy and straightforward to do, just take your time, take pictures of how things come apart so you can put them back together the same way.
You can get wire and swag chain from any hardware store, and not much has changed about it, so it'll be shiny and non-sticky, but otherwise perfectly period correct. You can also get a whole swag kit with hooks and everything.
