Thank you so much, I actually spent all day in work yesterday reading pretty much each of those wikipedia articles to find out the general backstory to AvX, so i think im just gonna hop on there and sure fuck it if I have to google stuff.
I was feeling spontaneous today so after work I actually picked up the AvX book, as well as All new xmen and uncanny vol 1. It was actually an ad for battle of the atom that got me interested, as I had been vaguely following the premise of all new on reddit and news sites. I saw that the crossover was basically in these 2, as well as the new "xmen" and "wolverine and the xmen". I think i will pick up the "xmen" trade when it comes around, and just pick up the relevant wolverine issues at the time, I might go back to the start of that at some point.
Cable and X-force does look good, so I might take a look at that too.
Thanks again for the advice.
ps. Have you read the Dark pheonix saga and Days of future past? Id like to pick up the two trades, because they are pretty much the "must read" of old school uncanny x-men, but they seem to be a bit hard to find. ex. £33 for a used copy of one. Just wondering if they are worth the search.
Here's some of the best and most essential stuff that you should read, in my opinion:
