At first I was using a air mattress, but found that to not leave a lot of head room which made getting in and out of the car a bit tricky. I switched to a double camping pad and it has been working out great! The wife and I took it on a week long camping trip with no issues. For the well behind the seats we just throw in our backpacks and some other stuff in to fill it up.

One other thing I recommend depending where you are, is to get a window sock so that you can leave the window open for air but keep bugs out.
