Here's some links I compiled when I put in an engine speed sensor for an MK4 2.0 engine. I'm not sure if the 1.8t is the same.

I would definitely say to try to put it in yourself. You'll need a metric allen set, a pair of good pliers to pull out the old one and some good old elbow grease. The job took me two hours and was labor intensive, but not too bad. Just make sure you get the right part. And as others have said get a code read first to confirm that it's really the speed sensor.
