Stop what you're doing and use a coil pack instead. They're cheap, and they're extremely simple to control with an arduino.

I used a bunch (10) of these on a recent project: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0155K56O4/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

You just feed them 12V and GND, and then chooch the 5v on and off to charge/discharge them.

The boots appear to be one piece connected to the coils... I'm still relatively inexperienced with engine/motor issues so I'm not sure exactly. This is what the coil/boot looks like: https://www.amazon.com/Pack-Ignition-Coils-Ford-TRIBUTE/dp/B00NHFWGBQ/ref=asc_df_B00NHFWGBQ/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=312026024613&hvpos=1o1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=1379181048473564525&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9002253&hvtargid=pla-568137645003&psc=1

The top of the coils in my car are a little different, but the bottom is the same. Is that the part you're talking about?

Do it yourself and save some money. Yes it sounds like a very steep price unless they are replacing the entire harness. Check youtube for some videos. https://www.amazon.com/Ignition-Coil-Pack-Replacement-Connector/dp/B01MQRAG2R

Original COPs made it ~200k miles, not bad. Definitely no need to spend $30 each on Motorcraft replacement COPs!

I bought this package:

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075NRP1KH/

I'm not married to Motorcraft spark plugs, but it was a pretty good deal, and convenient to get everything in one box.

There was some weird stuff on my old plugs that wasn't carbon. It was white, rather than black, and some plugs had more of it than others. I took photos, and I'd like to figure out what that was so I can keep it from happening again.

>Because they're $50 each

$35 for a set of 8

This set might not fit your model year but another one for the same price definitely will.

I've seen sooooo many of these f-150 have bad coil packs. They wont turn on the check engine light but, all your symptoms I've heard and gotten my butt kicked by. Replaced coil packs and was gravy from there. Hard part is figuring out what coil pack is bad. Only way to check a coil pack for sure is with a specialty machine that I've never seen in a shop. I'd turn you onto these https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YAVAXQQ/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_dp_ss_2?pf_rd_p=1944687522&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B001O074JU&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=VCDCHY270EEGZW566QP9 Given this to a bunch of my customers and they've fixed the problem 3/4 times. Too cheap not to try in my opinion.

Edit: Read the reviews you'll see your symptoms echoed by others

I ended up ordering this. It's probably one of those "cheap Chinese made coils" you warned about but I didn't have much luck finding a bunch of options since it's an older car.

Hopefully it will work good enough! Also bought these wires for good measure.

I bought a set of regular (but Chinese fake "red top") coils from Amazon for $80. They work great. You should pull a coil and see if oil is in the plug well since that's super common. Easy to replace the valve cover gaskets which cause that. You should check the half Moon gasket on the driver side for leaks which is common and change it at the same time. That's a little more involved since it requires a special tool to compress the cam chains tensioner and lift it up. Kits tend to be bundled with the tool but you gotta be careful with it because they are cheap plastic and can break.

I wouldn't recommend the catch can I bought since it is a leaky POS. The one that comes with the kit looks like good quality but it's quite expensive.

That catch can looks much better and those are the coils I bought.

The coil pack comes as a cluster. I figured this out yesterday. It's a strange set up. This is what it looks like

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01K0XF4F2/ref=cm_sw_r_fm_apa_i_ZnR4Db1CD39G4

So I'm not sure I can swap the coils to see.

It's the part that attaches to the spark plugs. It's a common failure on Ford's.

honestly, replace all the coils if you can afford it. $30 for an 8 pack of generics on amazon with prime/free shipping or $8 each at rockauto.com -- you can get a 4 pack of O2 sensors for $70... or $20 each at rockauto.

If you plan on replacing the O2 yourself, please remember my name so you can curse it repeatedly as you swap them.... the Coil On Plug (COPs) are super easy, just be careful to NOT snap off the plastic retaining clip, else you're going to want to put a glob of blue RTV on there to make sure they don't just shake off... or buy new ones and replace the wires by using the release tabs in the connector with a push pin.

Also check the COP harness for broken insulation or visible corrosion. BE CAREFUL not to break it, move it as little as possible.

also with that many miles, plan on replacing the timing chain in the future.
