They make balaclavas specifically for cycling! It looks like they also make skull caps in case you don't wanna cover your whole face.

  • Gloves.
  • Shoe Covers.
  • Balaclava.
  • Snow Tires. (Only good with disc brakes)

This is just a start, but these are some things I've used and things I've seen. Those gloves are impregnable to wind, and are incredibly warm in sub-freezing temps.

It's called a Balaclava, and you should be able to find thinner versions for sale lots of places. A quick search returned dozens of results for thin balaclava on Amazon.

Yes, it's really hard to avoid sun in cars during the summer months. If you're comfortable with looking like a huge dork, there is sun protective clothing that you can wear to cover up your face: https://www.amazon.com/Coolibar-UPF-Unisex-Face-Mask/dp/B07MJH9VPY Depending on who you're with, this might not be a big deal or it could be super awkward. I have no problem using it in front of my fiancee, who thinks it's hilarious when I put it on, haha. It's also great for when you're just driving alone. It's not a great solution but for me it's worth it during this time of year- I don't bother with it unless it's a really sunny day.

yup, winter windburn. use oils and cremes to moisturize as much as possible

also check out stuff like ski balm these seem better suited for your ponytail considering the part you slide over your face and the hood cocering your head are seperated.

Here is my list I made for another post. It works from 60 to -10 or so.

Here are my recommendations for surviving a Boston winter:

Bibs, Base Layer, Leg Warmers, Arm Warmers, Thermal Jersey, Jacket, Helmet Cover, Toe Cover, Shoe Cover, Gloves, Balaclava & Socks.

This is almost exclusively Pearl Izumi because it fits me, I can get a good deal on most of it if I wait to buy and the quality is amazing. It is not cheap but I rode almost every week outdoors last year during one of the worst winters we have had in a long time.

Also, do yourself a favor and get a rear fender and wet chain lube. Also staying hydrated is very important as anyone would tell you but it is hard to drink cold water when it is cold so I find this stuff from Skratch Labs really helps. Be prepared to a lot more drive train maintenance due to the salt and sand you will get in your chain and cassette.

Let me know what you have questions on and I will be happy to report back. I don't use all of this on every ride, it is weather dependent but in the middle of winter, I certainly like being able to bundle up and then remove a layer or unzip when needed. It makes riding fun when the thermometer dips below 15°F.

A camelbak is soooo useful. Not having to carry a water bottle or have it swinging all over or getting it out of the backpack every time you want a drink is so nice.

If you're like me and your ears and nose get really cold in the winter, you'll need a ski mask so you can stay out longer.

These things came in clutch this year, I ordered them on a whim a few days before Roo after sitting on my wishlist for a while and they're a lot better than bandanas for keeping dust out of your mouth and nose- they don't need to be folded so they're a lot less hot and you can just pull it up over your face without worrying about it!

I definitely ate a lot less dirt this year, I was basically chewing on it last year.

I know this is the single best style of head gear you can possibly wear for cold weather. Kept my whole face and ears warm no matter how cold it was in Alaska.

Stumbling across this post a little late, but I'm currently making a STALKER/Metro 2033 inspired short film and have created a couple of costumes so far that I am very proud of. So let me give you some tips.

-First off, stay with authentic Russian gear as much as you can. The more Russian the more coherent your cosplay will look. It's really hard to find stuff like this in most US surplus stores. Majority of the times all they have is retired ALICE packs and east german shit, which is nothing you're gonna find roaming around Pripyat. Because of this I recommend shopping around online. Ebay is good for most items. I just ordered a bunch of Russian shit from Finnish surplus store and shipping was only ~$20. In all honesty, just avoid retail surplus stores unless you're bordering a soviet satellite state.

-Gas Mask. This where most Stalker cosplays immediately fall short. They opt out and get the cheapest/first gas mask they can find. I hate seeing a Stalker cosplayer with an Isreali/US gas mask. Also avoid the Czech M10 as they look silly and EVERYBODY uses them. You can get a Russian GP-5 for the same damn price as any of those alternatives and it looks 100 times better. There's great kits for GP-5's on ebay for just some $25 that include carrying bags & hoses. There's also the PBF, the GP-7, and the PMK gas masks which are all russian. The PBF and other Sniper gas masks can be seen on NPCs in the Stalker game. Honestly just ebay search "Russian Gas Masks" Just make sure to check the size when you buy any full face rubber gas masks because they will squeeze the hell out of your head if they're too small.

-Next there's clothes. FIRST RULE OF CLOTHES: Always buy used. It will save you money and automatically look better. No Stalker is walking around with fresh off the rack equipment. An easy way to get a quick uniform together is to just get a chemsuit. Most chemsuits look the same regardless of nationality, so you can even get a shitty East German one for $10 online somewhere and it will do the job. I've even found $7 chemsuits that the seller has claimed that people have died in (talk about used...). If you have $100-$150 to drop, get a Russian Gorka outfit.

-Waste Down. If you're not gonna use a chem suit, get BDU pants, baggy cargos, or any tan pants will work for legs. Hit a thrift store, ebay, or yard sale to find some worn boots to wear. I also recommend some military knee pads. Again, nationality doesn't matter with these and most surplus stores will have a pair for less than $20.

-For above the waste, a variety of jackets will work. Check out the clearance rack at Wilson Leathers. I found a nice gestapo-esque leather jacket there for $50 and a nice fur lined pleather jacket for only $30. For my other Stalker outfit, I just used a tan American eagle jacket and dirtied it up. DON'T STOP THERE. I see way too many Stalker cosplayers who just throw on a military jacket, boots, and a gas mask. You need to gear up. A tactical vest can be wondrous for this if you have the money to spend. The problem with vests and rigs is that most people cheap out yet again and get an airsoft rig that just looks really cheap or a blatantly American military rig that they found at their nearest surplus store. This is never good. I would avoid MOLLE rigs all together as most of them look too American. Go online and find a Russian rig or don't get one at all. If you can't afford $70-$150 for a good authentic rig, then there's plenty of other alternatives for much cheaper. Get a worn brown leather belt and tie it around your waste at belly button level. This pinches the jacket inwards and instantly gives a military like look. Throw some leather ammo pouches on there too. The belt alone accompanied with a gas mask bag slung over your shoulder looks 100 times better than any scrub with a brand new CONDOR chest rig that only carries NATO magazines. These will also help tighten the figure of your torso so you don't look like some scrub who threw on their grandpas old coat. The same goes for knee pads on your pants.

-Head. The hood seems to be a favorite for Stalker cosplay. It's also the cheapest and is generally easier to make look good. Get one of these, they're perfect for a stalker outfit and make it easier to find a jacket as you don't need to look for a hooded one. Just make sure to dirty it up because the wool looks too fresh and cheap right out of the bag. Alternatively you can get a helmet, but authentic Russian ones (aside from the WWII coconut head) get damn expensive. You could use a US M88 helmet (they make airsoft replicas for dirt cheap), but it can take away from the Russian feel of it if you don't pimp it out.

-Clutter your outfit. The more worn and fucked up your whole attire looks the better. Make your gear asymmetrical, chalk up some russian slang on your jacket or gas mask. Smear neosporin on your clothes to make stains. Roll around in the mud. Carve scratches in your knee pads. And of course, ALWAYS BUY USED.

-Guns. If you're using any NATO rifle you're just deteriorating the quality of your cosplay outfit. I could give a pass to some H&K models, but you should honestly just get a kalash. BY GOD DO NOT GET AN M4 OR M16. There are plenty of airsoft guns that look good enough and can have the orange tip plucked right off. Metal body airsoft and authentic wood FTW.

-In all, just don't be this guy. I'd hate to point fingers and ridicule somebody for trying, but that's the perfect example of the bad Stalker/metro cosplay that I see wayyy too often. He's got an expensive ass Gorka jacket but the rest of his getup just puts it to waste. Cheap M10 Czech gas mask, silly green hood that's probably his highschool colors (why not just use the Gorka hood?), random BDU camo pattern pants (probably NATO or US), nice American hiking shoes, British Sniper Rifle, no gloves (this kills me), all gear is in immaculate condition, and he's swimming in the gorka (belt around the waste would have helped). With the $100+ he spent on that Gorka alone, you could have made an amazing Stalker getup. My favorite Stalker outfit cost me under $50 to make (excluding the gun).

Have you seen the numerous bikers when it's super cold in the winter? The air can be dealt with.

The one problem that's tough is snow and ice - slipping on it. If things are clear you're good.

You can make the air more comfortable eith something like this:
http://www.amazon.com/OneTigris-Fleece-Balaclava-Cover-Warmers/dp/B00OZ4Q6B4/ref=sr_1_6?ie=UTF8&qid=1456969948&sr=8-6&keywords=Head+cover

Pull the front over your nose and any air you breathe in is warmed up a lot before reachibg your lungs. I have something just like it.

Shellaclava. Its a bit thicker than a buff under the helmet, but it a lot thicker around the neck and quietens things down a bit. Quite warm too

Native Californian here - for coats get something that will go down to your knees. Down/down alternative coat. I can speak to women’s clothing but if you care about style/brand Macy’s has good selections in many brand names as well as less expensive unknown brand names. Not sure if they have started stocking them for the season but think something like this:

As a modest four door car driver myself, I HIGHLY recommend winter tires. Got mine at Discount Tire last fall and got separate wheels for easier swap back and forth. Game changer and 100% worth the investment.

I also recommend a face mask type hat even just for the time you have to walk from the car to the building. When the wind chill goes down to -20 or more you will NEED IT. Something like this:
