I would totally go for a few bean bags for your reading area. I know they are a bit more expensive than some bean bags, but I have 3 in my classroom and they are jumped on constantly and have been thrown up on more than once. The material is thick and sturdy. There is a double locked zipper so the kids can't open it. And they are double stitched. They are durable.

I can't believe my brain stored this idea away just for this moment, but there is a concept called "definition by prototype". http://c2.com/cgi/wiki?ApproachesToDefinitions

Basically you could point to a good example of a chair, and point out ways that the beanbag is similar or different.

Amazon calls this a chair but all it is is cloth around some stuffing. It's just in a shape with a back, seat, and armrests.

And they also call this a "bean bag chair."

So, yes, I think it is a chair. Probably getting close to not being a chair, but it is a chair.
