If your bike is valuable, it needs a valuable case.

Otherwise, go to a bike store and get a bike box that matches yours - giant rectangular thing but AirCanada does not look highly on these.

You can demount the front-wheel and rotate the handlebar and store it in a large bag (or better a designated bike-bag like this). This way it doesn't count as bike but just as "normal" luggage.
If you're going Trans-Atlantic and have a nice bike it's worth it to buy/rent a hard case like this one https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00FNSS6PA/. That one will last for 10+ years with a couple flights per year. Mine has a few holes in it now (I'm not really sure how) but it's still protecting the bike and I've got black duct tape over the holes. Imagine how bummed you would be if you got a hole in your frame instead of the case.
I don't think you should get a soft case for a long flight where the baggage handlers will be doing whatever they do with your bike when it's out of your sight.
Any recommendations on bike bags that'll be reliable to fly with? Really hoping not to spend more than $400 at most and my partner is interested in this which I'm scared to put my bike in. Both bikes are aluminum with carbon forks, but want to take advantage of the reduced bike fees on flights for our upcoming trip out to Colorado/Wyoming. Also up to rent from someone if you're in the NYC area.

I've just disassembled the bike, packed it in a couple of generic boxes and shipped it UPS. Assembled it when I got to my destination (this of course assumes you have a ship to point, a friend, an LBS, a hotel your staying at.
How many times have you used it? I’m interested in finding out your thoughts about it. I’ve been eyeballing this one for a while...
Two bikes fit under the bed, which I wanted for when we're visiting cities or leaving the van for an extended period of time. Having them sit on the outside is too tempting for opportunistic passers-by ;)

Anyone have experience bringing their bike on Amtrak (specifically in the northeast)? I’m thinking of heading down to NYC from Boston for Grant’s Tomb crit, but don’t a car and don’t know anyone else heading down. Looking at Amtrak, none of the options offer bicycle transport as an option... so- I’m thinking of buying a bike box (specifically this one: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01M0D9AMM/ref=mp_s_a_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1518398433&sr=8-5&pi=AC_SX236_SY340_QL65&keywords=bike+box+for+air+travel&dpPl=1&dpID=41Fem2RUCtL&ref=plSrch) to pack my bike in and carry on. Not sure how the conductors will feel about the large case though.
