Change the shifter buahings? ..old car, they probably never or havnt been changed in a while..

It shouldnt be too difficult to find a bushing to make that work. In fact, here's one on amazon. its not perfect, its a 3pack and overkill b/c it's brass, but it'd remove any problems you'd have with balance.
