Thank you! I remember seeing an awesome cross-section of a huge British ship when I was a kid, but I couldn't remember the artist.

Edit: Found the book even.

Stephen Biesty's wonderful multi-layered cross-section books are marvelously suitable for children, and great achievements regardless of their intended age group. I read this one so many times in my youth that it soon resembled the ship being described.

EDIT: Additionally, the publishing company that puts out many of his best cross-section books (Dorling Kindersley) has numerous other titles under the "military history" banner. The Eyewitness series is lavishly illustrated and aimed at children 8 and up. See this one on World War II for an example.

Stephen Biesty's Cross Section Man Of War is marketed as a childrens book but its actually a valuable guide to every aspect of the inside of a ship of the line from Jack's era. It takes as its subject the H.M.S. Victory and each page is a slice of the ship, drawn in exacting and accurate detail with copious notes describing everything and everyone in each illustration. A really valuable addition to your understanding, this book conveys more knowledge of shipboard life and ship construction than many other books I know on the subject. http://www.amazon.com/Stephen-Biestys-Cross-Sections-Man-War/dp/product-description/156458321X

This makes me want to buy one of those warship cross section books I used to gawk at when I was a kid.

I don't know--the Man-O-War Cross Sections Book definitely has people puking.

I actually remember this one and found it just as ridiculous as a seven-year-old. There are more in this vein, including the surely tasteful T is for Titanic, because what better way to teach your kids their letters than a massive Maritime accident?
