All of Kevyn Aucoin's books regarding makeup and style are fantastic for beginners and those who just need a kick-start to their makeup journey. I am particularly fond of Making Faces and Face Forward. He also includes very sweet personal anecdotes.

If you are into makeup transformations, Kevyn Aucoin has a great coffee table book (from '96) called The Art Of Makeup. He transforms famous faces of the 90s into Old Hollywood movie stars through the magic of contouring and lighting and shares his tips and tricks. There's a section that takes you through each decade of the last century and explores makeup application of that era.
That book really made me fall in love with makeup.
When I was little I had a babysitter who would do "make-overs" with me and my sister so I probably picked up some tips from her.
Also, when I was maybe 11 I remember taking a book out of the library that told you how to apply make-up and how to use it to enhance or minimize certain features and what colors look best on what skin-tones. I would take that book out all the time and straight up study it. I think it was a Mary Quant book but I'm not positive.

You're not doing too badly in that your problems are fixable ones. It's not like you're dealing with a persistent beard that will need lasering or 1mm of foundation to hide the stubble.
If I were you, I'd hit the library, and get some basic beauty how-to books. Because I can't see balls all as far as makeup and hairstyling in the ones purportedly with it. It's tricky styling curly hair (but gorgeous once you get it down). Makeup has a learning curve associated.
Something like this, and anything else near it in that part of the library/bookstore. Some copies of 'Allure' magazine; it's mostly hair and make-up.
More feminine eyeglasses (cheap from overseas nowadays) and brow shaping would go a long way, too.
