Everything you would spend getting a D4 to work underwater is likely better put toward a rated dive light. As fun as it would be to convert this sub's darling into something that can survive those pressures, the specific requirements that diving lights are prone to kinda conflict with the mission of the D4.

Big things to keep in mind:

  • Pressure is the enemy of your switch. Most diving lights utilize magnetic switches, because traditional clicky or e-switches compress at anything past maybe four meters underwater.

  • Your light has to be more waterproof than you might think. Again, due to pressure, single o-rings may not be enough to keep your light sealed.

You would be hard pressed to find a container for the D4 that would both allow for use of the e-switch and be able to manage the intense amount of heat the thing generates.

Instead, look into another light that might fit your requirements. I know that ThorFire makes a dive light with three XPL emitters in deepish reflectors, which should give you more throw. I don't have any experience with it myself but its worth looking into.

Our resident luminary ZeroAir also reviewed a couple XTAR dive lights (one and two) that you might want to peep at. The first one, the XTAR D36, might be more of interest to you as it puts out more light than the D4.

I have a coupon to buy this kit for $25.79 if you want it. Sofirn makes nice stuff and this looks like a great deal.

  1. No, the boosted board has an odometer that tracks both the trip and total distance traveled.

  2. https://www.amazon.com/GoScope-HALO-Rechargeable-Underwater-Flashlight/dp/B01G7QFS84
Expensive but one of the best options.
    I got these:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B071S11SFJ/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00PH0E7RK/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and a flashlight and did a DYI to mount it on my helmet. GoScope seems way more compact.

  3. They will update us later in November, but for now all we know is that they will be shipping it sometime in December.

I bought this one today. I just got my open water this past weekend so i'm by no means an expert on the subject but the reviews looked decent and I wont be pushing its limits any time soon.

As others have mentioned, it will depend on what kind of camping he likes to do and what he already owns, but here are some of my favorite pieces of gear I've picked up over the years:
This little guy is a pretty good rechargeable lantern/flashlight with magnets so you can stick it to stuff and a usb output so you can charge other things with it.

I've had one of these for YEARS and I just lost it the other day. There was $200 worth of gear in the pannier that fell off my bike and I'm more pissed about that cup than the rest of the gear combined. It looks like they made it a little taller, which I do not like, but he may. There are several other brands that make something similar in both steel or titanium. It's not just a cup though...it will slip perfectly over the bottom of a nalgene, you can cook directly on a stove or fire with it, and you can pair it with the smaller jetboil coffee press or the guts of a standard bodum press and turn it into a french press. It's the exact same diameter.
A Sawyer can be an AMAZING if you're going to be anywhere long enough to pack water in. The squeeze bag it comes with sucks, but it has standard bottle threads, so you can screw it into a 2-liter bottle with the bottom cut off and it turns it into a gravity filter. Just pour more river/lake water into the 2 liter every minute or so and it will keep pouring clean water into your bottles. Also, you notice the weird skinny part in the middle? It's exactly the width of duct tape. You can wrap several yards of it around there.
EDIT: forgot some words

From cheap with good reviews Elfeland XM-L T6 at Banggood.

Cheapish from Amazon with good reviews. One of the dudes on BLF reviewed it too. Sofirn SD05 CREE XHP50.2 LED 2550 Lumen Actually go to this page on BLF and you will see it listed there with a coupon code to get it for $16.09

Sofirn SD01 Scuba Diving Flashlight 3* Cree XPL 3000LM LED Light Underwater Searchlight This one my friend bought and I think he bought it from Amazon but I don't see it available through there. It takes 4 x 18650's and is a large heavy light. Excellent output.

I bought a a Tovatec for my primary and an Orcatorch for my backup. Both are 1000 lumen rated and are quite bright.

  1. The Tovatec has adjustable focus, so depending on what you want to do, it makes sense, but it is quite heavy. I am not joking, the weight is substantial. It comes with a rechargeable battery, charger and a socket for 3 AA batteries as well.
  2. The Orca d550 is very capable still. Light (pun totally intended), bright, has a back magnetic switch (which I find better and the rocker on the Tovatec) and comes with the rechargeable battery, charger and a wrist strap.

Both have 3 light modes + strobe and come with additional o-rings. I hope this helps!

I attached an incredibly bright diving light to my helmet with a go pro attachment.

The tail light I used is only for being seen. Shredlights weren't cutting it on my board, but I did have to jerryrig it to the trucks with some t clamps from Ace Hardware.

These

They're pretty good :)

u/guerrilla154 · 2 pointsr/flashlight

I have the Sofirn SD05. I haven't tested it at depth, but it's a good dive light in terms of how it operates. I've also contacted Sofirn about the possibility of a 4000K 80+ CRI emitter, and they said they'll look into it.

I'd also suggest taking a look at some of the dive lights made by XTAR.

u/Newbosterone · 2 pointsr/EDC

Buy something in plastic or Type 3 Hard Anodized that's waterproof and tough as hell, and wash it often. Look at cheap dive lights.

u/ioncloud9 · 2 pointsr/scuba

I got a similar light made by the same OEM (Brinyte). This one has multiple beam intensity settings, push button activation, a red led setting, and a ball attachment arm to attach to a lighting tray. It also takes both 18650 and 26650 batteries. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01JS97Q7S/ref=cm_sw_em_r_mt_dp_U_qNERCbSB3SCJK

Ive had two tries with cheep online torches.
One was from ebay and cost roughly 14
It held great to about 15 meters but after going to 30 it started flickering and by the time i got out the torch was HOT and filled with black water

Bu recently i bought a 50$ torch from amazon and its holding great (tested to 40 meters, and 20+ dives to different depths)
I like it because it has a magnetic switch, several o-rings and a standard rechargeable 18650 battery (also, it works)

Most of the cenotes available to dive for recreational divers have areas that are completely dark and a little bottle-necked in spots. Unfortunately, that's just how caverns are. Albeit, they are the easiest to experience cave diving and navigate without getting into really super tight areas, and to have a semi-controlled atmosphere.

That being said my only recommendation is to get perhaps a small beacon light - like these -that you can both hang from your BCDs to keep visual contact. That may help with the fear. Usually all dive operators out there are fantastic and will do their best to make you comfortable and explain the dive conditions. Have a wonderful time!

u/Zak · 1 pointr/flashlight

The flashlight I'm seeing in this listing appears to be designed for two 18650 batteries. 10440s should be too small to make contact, and if you did manage to connect them with spacers, would not be able to output as much current as this light is likely to demand, or would have a runtime of about 3 minutes if they could.

Omfg my phone.. when I go to click edit, it deletes instead, I have to click like half a cm higher to get edit.

Here is what I have in mind:

This strip in either red/blue or white, going to run them around the inside of the frame, with strips dividing each plants space so that the parts of the plants facing each other get some light too.

This as my main light at the top.

It seems like a good overall coverage and apparently would keep temperatures to the level I’m looking at, as I’m in the UK and it doesn’t often get hot.

The only reason I’ve gone for solely LED is that they seem really easy to set up and with 5 separate lights being used I can turn some off if need be, as a first timer I just want everything to be easy af and I have found it hard to grasp lighting other than LED

u/Sophisticated_Sloth · 1 pointr/SpaceBuckets

Any thoughts on the LED strips aimed at plant growth? I've been seeing them on amazon a lot lately, and surely they're even better than "regular" coloured strips, no? I'm specifically talking about LED strips such as these

I use a GoScope. It's waterproof, 1000 lumens, lasts for 2 hours, and mounts to a GoPro clip!

You can get them on amazon here

They work really well, taken one of those down to 90-110 about 4 times now.

u/NASAscientist · 0 pointsr/diving

I have thought about this a LOT recently. I was considering investing in a new camera rig, since I'll need one for not just scuba but other things as well. $1600 Nikon Z7, $4000 Nauticam housing, $600 Atomos Ninja V, $2000 Ninja housing, $2600 for two Keldan lights, plus a couple hundred more for the arms and floats. The costs for many things are absurd in scuba, but especially for photography/videography. What I decided was to get a Hero 7 and make my own dive housing, which took about two weeks of time to design but ultimately will only cost me approximately $560 in parts.

As part of that, I decided to go with some inexpensive dive lights from Amazon for about $65/each. I actually tried the Hero 7 with the supersuit plus this light in my hand using the goodman handle, but even with the image stabilization the footage was too shakey for my tastes, and overall it's really hard to control a GoPro with one hand and a light in another hand. This is why I decided to build my own rig.

Regarding the light though, there are several vendors selling the same one and some of the reviews caused me concern about leaks, but I have tested 2 of them in the water for 3 dives now, as deep as 60 feet and had no issues. What I did however was put a liberal amount of silicon grease in the threads to really make sure it's sealed (and even a little around the edge of the glass between the glass and the metal frame), and I would recommend doing the same. They are very bright and have attachments to connect to ball adapters or be used in-hand with a goodman handle, but their primary downside compared to professional lights is that they will dim as the batteries get drained further and further into the dive. If you are looking for an inexpensive, powerful solution however, that is what worked for me.

My custom Hero 7 rig isn't built yet (still waiting for a part from China) but when I finish it and fully test it I'll post about it here in /r/diving and/or /r/scuba. In a nutshell it has a 10" 2k screen contained in a sealed acrylic frame, attached to an acrylic housing which is itself flooded, only there to add flotation and provide some additional utility/storage and support the arms/lights along with the attachment point for the Hero 7 which is inside of its own slightly modified supersuit housing. It is being built with a single 3/8" thick 24"x48" cast acrylic sheet. I'd be glad to share my work-in-progress notes if you want to do something of your own before I wrap up in the next month or two. Just let me know.

My local dive shop has this one on sale right now:

Underwater Kinetics C8 eLED (L2) Dive Light, Black https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01J92Y9ZQ/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_5boqDbSKWRCGZ

Which I think may work good as a primary. Not sure as a backup though
