The raise in water rates to pay for this has gotten people pretty angry, a la Skyrocketing DC Water Bills Leave Some Customers Unable to Pay. I support the project but I've definitely noticed the higher bills.

I went on a water saving binge, here are some water tips I learned:

  • Fix all leaks no matter how small they seem. Common leaks people often miss is toilets that fill constantly a little bit or leaks on outside hose spigots
  • Check that all your fixtures are low flow
  • Get a hand wash toilet lid. When you flush the clean water that fills the tank first goes through the faucet. Example
  • DOE will give you free rain capture barrels, use these to water your landscaping
  • If you have a lawn that you water get rid of much of it as you can and plant water smart plants. DOE also has a program to install a free rain garden to help prevent runoff and another one for trees
  • Need to run the water before it gets hot? Have a hot water recirculation pump installed. Say you are taking the first shower of the morning, press a button or have a timer set and a small pump recirculates the cold water that would normally go down the drain back to the water heater. It pays for itself in a few years but if the upfront cost is too high try insulating your pipes with cheap foam and insulate the spaces they run through to keep the hot water pipe warmer longer.

The first 2 are the most important, for the rest the return on investment are smaller but still good to do.

  • edit - Forgot to add, if you can't replace the toilet with a low flow one you can also retrofit a dual flush onto it yourself for very cheap.

This renovation took wayy longer than anticipated (which, isn't that always the case?). My boyfriend and I did a lot of the work ourselves as well.

We tore out the old kitchen, did all the tiling (my first time!), repaired drywall, painted the walls, ceilings and all of the trim, and replaced the track lighting for more modern lights.

We left the cabinets, countertop, flooring, electrical and plumbing to the pros!

Edit!

  • Cabinet colour is Benjamin Moore Cosmopolitan

  • Cabinet hardware is Lew's Hardware from Myknobs.com (my favourite website to say!). Knobs here. / Bar pulls here.

  • Countertops are quartz and are 'White Attica' from Caesarstone.

  • Backsplash tiles are from Home Depot. They're mini-subway tiles on mesh sheets. I can't seem to find them anymore on the website.

  • Gold brackets for shelves are from Anthropologie

  • Wood for shelving was commissioned from local wood maker but they're reclaimed Douglas fir that's been stained to look like Walnut.

  • Sink is from a company called Zuhne - got it off Amazon

  • Faucet is Kraus Oletto also purchased from Amazon

Thanks! Yea - we use that sink all the time. Maybe you could fit a bar sink like this? Good luck!

change the sink and faucet up. Having a nice big single sink has been my favorite part about the kitchen.

Those are also available on amazon. Around 50 bucks for the cheaper version, you can get fancy for sure too.

Here’s a great option:

27” undermount

I have one of their sinks and they are really really excellent. Quiet, heavy gauge steel and I’m never going back to a top mount. Being able to wipe your counters off into the sink is amazing.

Also I just looked and I have a 31.5”. It’s massive. Big enough you can put a pasta pot in it and it only takes up half the sink. Can’t imagine you wouldn’t be happy with a 27.

We just revamped our entire kitchen and installed this sink: http://www.amazon.com/Kraus-Undermount-Single-Stainless-Kitchen/dp/B003U26QZS

We under mounted it to quartz counter tops. It works great for washing big pans (those are much harder to fit in double sinks.

Check out Kraus kitchen sinks that they sell on amazon. That's where I bought mine. Great quality and thick gauge of stainless steel means less noise when water hits it.

u/tutters12 · 2 pointsr/HomeImprovement

We purchased this single-bowl undermount sink for our 30” sink cabinet (also an IKEA kitchen).

The sink is very deep (in the best way) and we’re super happy with it.

I think you'd be looking at bar sinks which are generally smaller. Maybe something like getting two of these: http://www.amazon.com/Artisan-MH-1618-D8-Undermount/dp/B0084JY1XG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1372095487&sr=8-2 and mounting them sideways (and center your faucet).

I got this guy for my concrete countertop. I was working with a small'ish space, so this was the biggest I could go (garbage disposal adds some height too, so don't forget that)

I did have an issue, it was too heavy for the hookups, so we put in 2 legs to hold it up, work perfectly.

Go big with sinks! I wanted bigger!!!

Luckily the house I'm renting came with a wash tub in the basement. Similar to this. Accommodates my 10 gal brew kettle and a couple bags of ice pretty easily. I attached a 3 ft length of hose with a few Colder quick disconnect fittings on it to create a jetting action. Works great for cleaning out fermenters. I will install this style tub in the place I eventually buy I am so satisfied with it.

u/arctic_man · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

I got this sink when we redid our kitchen.

Granted, it is a top mount, but they make undermounts the same way. Best features are flat bottom, extra deep, extra thick steel, and square sides. Get something like that if you want to spend a bit extra.

It's a sink you put on your toilet to wash your hands with so you don't waste water.

They have something similar that modifies to a normal toilet to achieve the same thing. You wash your hands to fill the tank, and then use that tank water to flush next time.

They're sold everywhere

Edit: in fact in two days you may fix your own toilet

Yeah it was the white one of what I posted

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RUJSVT6/

But with all of the designs I'm sure that it varies. Didn't know if you'd be into an off-set drain. I didn't look at review dates on some other ones. I know less than 10 years ago they came out with Silgranit II so they obviously saw the need to do something.

That one you linked looks good, not familiar with the company but good reviews. Have you looked at the composites in person yet?

u/12LetterName · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

He's full of shit.

A quick look brings up something that would probably have been acceptable: Way smaller radius

What he installed isn't even remotely close.

u/scoobysnatcher · 1 pointr/HomeImprovement

Mind linking me to the one with 9 reviews you're referring to?

EDIT: this white, composite sink gets very good reviews, too.

u/thefeldmann · 1 pointr/Homebrewing

I was thinking of a sink similar to this one, I've seen them for around $650 CAD. But if I start to run over budget this will be an easy compromise.
