You might like a really good book on the same topic: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007EWJBIE/ref=kinw_myk_ro_title

His novels are really good, but I can't read them too frequently because the bad guys are just so fucking disturbing.

Here's what I've read in the past year plus in Kindle format that I thought gave you good bang for the buck...

  • Backbite (2011) by Adrienne Jones [$2.99] ~ Incredible off-the-wall sci-fi novel. This book made me believe in the potential of the Kindle ebook. So well written.

  • Bigfoot War (2010) by Eric S. Brown [$4.99] ~ This could make a great genre movie.

  • Draculas (2010) by Jeff Strand, F. Paul Wilson, Jack Kilborn, Blake Crouch [$2.99] ~ This is an amazing collaborative horror novel.

  • Wired (2011) by Douglas E. Richards [$2.99]

  • Wool (Omnibus Edition) by Hugh Howey [$4.99] ~ Or if you have Amazon Prime you can borrow this for free for a month.

People who complain about ebook prices are the same people who complain about Netflix Watch Instantly not having anything to watch aka unimaginative maroons who like to complain about everything.

I published my first book last month, and sales are basically non-existent. I think I could really use some tips on how to get the word out, so if anyone has some, that would be very appreciated. My initial sales goal is to make $20. So far, I've made $4.

And since this IS a self-promo thread,

Sarah's Ghost

Severely abused as a child by a caretaker, David Elliott has worked his entire adult life to overcome his past. With help and support from his brother Michael, David has become a doctor, working as a specialist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario. But when Jaymie Van Niekerk, a young Deaf girl, is admitted to the hospital, David's world threatens to unravel. Her case is too familiar, reminding him of the medical abuse of his childhood, that ultimately took the life of his sister Sarah.

There’s a great book called Split Second that deals with this and how sending something back in time for even a fraction of a second results in teleportation

u/apawst8 · 2 pointsr/todayilearned

That was the plot of a book I read. Someone discovered how to time travel. Problem is the time being traveled is very short, 45 microseconds, iirc. What's the usefulness of that? The object being sent back in time 45 microseconds, merely appears in our universe. Since the earth is constantly moving, it appears 58 feet from the original location. The original object being sent back in time remains, so it was actually used as a matter duplication device.

EDIT: The book is Split Second by Douglas E Richards.

u/AntiProtagonest · 2 pointsr/Showerthoughts

You should really read "Split Second" by Doug Richards. It deals with this very subject, in a very very interesting way.

Split Second

Technically it's time travel but it's used more as duplication - it's all explained in the book - great read.

> he would be a prisoner no matter where he was.

The restrictions in prison for serious offenders go beyond "you have to stay inside this property".

This is of course good for the other purpose of justice: rehabilitation.

Many people think the only purpose of rehabilitation is to make them safe to re-enter society. This is false. Rehabilitation is important and should be provided even when the person will die in prison as Mr. Bissonnette likely will. Rehabilitation is for them as well as for us.

> Actually, that sounds like a near sci-fi premise.

I think it would be a dystopian novel. 24/7 paralysis goes far beyond what's necessary to restrict someone's movement. (Although it would be a more humane tool when having to do cell extractions on extremely violent prisoners.) A friend of mine is prison guard in the US and has that job. It's a horrible thing for prisoners and guards. Soul destroying really. But 24/7?

And it would likely mean dispensing with rehabilitation which I maintain is still important. This isn't a desire to wreak revenge on the guilty. Punishment, rehabilitation, the protection of society and condemnation of wrong are all vitally important parts of justice and none should be dispensed with.

But if you want to read a vaguely similar premise and a bit of a fun read, try Coma Imprisonment. I had fun with it. I heard about it from the author on /r/PrintSF and he says he's planning more, so if you can't stand it when the main questions aren't answered, then you might want to wait.

But I enjoyed it.

If you want something more science fictiony / fantasy stuff and more inspired by Hawaii, the books by Carol Severance are good. Reefsong and Demon Drums. It took me years of hunting used book stores and library sales to get my own copy, they are now on amazon kindle so everyone can easily enjoy them.

Demon Drums: https://www.amazon.com/Demon-Drums-Island-Warrior-Book-ebook/dp/B00J90EY0E/

This is the sequel to The Diabolical Doctor, which is also free on Amazon right now. You can pick up the first book here.

Sounds awesome, can't wait to check it out.

Have you read the book Split Second? It's really refreshing. I find a lot of time travel movies happen at the time of time travel maturity, but this book starts from the time of discovery. What kind of things can you do when you can only go back millionths of a second?

Children of Wrath | $2.99 eBook, $13.99 Paperback, On Audible
***** Five Star rated Dystopian Thriller.

Five years after working triage during America’s terrible Day of Destruction, Philadelphian Dr. Ethan King wants nothing more for himself and his wife than a normal life. In the aftermath, however, life is anything but normal. The mysterious nerve gas unleashed during the nationwide terrorist attack has left its disturbing mark among the millions of victims, namely brain abnormalities in unborn children. These children, dubbed Inexorables, live up to their name: they are ruthlessly violent, irrepressibly psychopathic—and incurable. They kill without thought or remorse, and inflict torment on their victims with childish glee.

In his pursuit of a normal, peaceful life, Ethan tries as best he can to put these grim realities to the back of his mind. But one cold night, when he comes face to face with an abandoned Inexorable freezing to death in the snow, he must make a choice that could cost him everything, and unravel a thread of dark woven secrets. As he races to find a cure for whatever is creating a generation of doomed children, Ethan discovers that doing the right thing in an evil world is never as clear and easy as it seems.
