Recipe!

  • 1 bottle red wine (I used a $4 merlot, you add other stuff so the wine quality isn't as important)
  • 1 orange, peeled and cut in half
  • 1/2 cup honey (add more or less based on how sweet you want it, I tried a mango honey from whole foods)
  • 1/4 cup of brandy (I used a $10 bottle of Christian Brothers)
  • Mulling spices (you can blend your own, but I just buy them preblended) then just follow the packet directions for the volume. It's like cloves, cinnamon & anise). For a 24oz bottle of wine, I used about 1/4th of the packet.

    Put everything (except the Brandy) in a large pot and bring to a simmer, you don't want to bring the temperature too high because you'll start burning off the alcohol. Don't let it boil. Let it simmer for like 10 mins, until all the flavors sort of mingle. Reduce the heat to low add in the brandy (to bring the alcohol level back up and let it sit at really low heat for another 10 mins to mellow the brandy. Turn the heat off and let it sit for another 10 mins and drink while still warm!

    I recommend straining out the spices and orange chunks before drinking, especially important if you plan on bottling.
