I am no expert on mustaches, but when I had one, I used clubman mustache wax and just combed a little in. the wax really lets you shape it however you want. When I really wanted the captain hook curls, I took a pencil and wrapped the ends around it, then used a blow dryer on it. I needed mustache wax if I wanted it to behave.

Me with normal beard.

And one day I decided I didn't want facial hair anymore. so I had some fun shaving it

Here’s the link. I got it from Amazon.

Fisticuffs Cigar Blend Mustache Wax, 1 oz Tin

Deathgrip - this stuff is awesome, uses pine tar and is a rubbery solid even in summer heat (unlike all those oily ones that just melt). Takes some determination to soften to apply in winter, but is well worth it and you feel like you're in the woods all day.

Over 10K? Fancy!

I think this is fancy. 426 cubic inches of American Muscle. It'll turn any snoozer into a cruizer.

There is no way that this should cost so damn much. Lumber isn't that expensive.

This will make me fancy by keeping my beard looking fine.

I used Bounder Extra Firm Moustache Wax in the early stages of my moustache when it was shorter, but now I use a medium hold wax from Beardbrand; the longer my moustache has gotten the less wax is need to keep it out of my mouth, often I will not use wax at all anymore. If I am going to drink beer or wine, I will definitely put on some wax.

u/Parasamgate · 3 pointsr/beards

I use this, but everyone has their favorite.

u/Dr_Cheese_MD · 3 pointsr/beards

I usually trim the cheeks and neck areas with an electric trimmer with a 1 inch comb attachment. I like my chin a big bigger, so I tackle that just scissors. Deciding to keep my moustache was the best decision I've ever made. I live by this moustache wax now http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004E9EV2G/ref=oh_details_o02_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
I use a regular razor blade to clean up the scruff on the top of my cheeks and the very bottom of my neck line, I get stragglers in those areas that don"t blend well with the rest.

I am a bit amatur as well but got some good advice from others. I have had a rough time getting some of my beard curls on one side of my face to stay down. I have had the best luck using beard oil and combing it a couple to 3 times a day real quick to tame it.
I know your pain on a good barber close by. I had to drive an hour to get mine trimmed. Not a big deal I just make an afternoon out of it. Just make sure you go somewhere they know what they are doing and they can help you out quite a bit since they will actually see you in person and hopefully suggest things specifically for you.

Here is my bit of advice and what I use.

First get a couple good combs, some beard oil and possibly some wax for your moustache.

This is what I have:

I use Kent Combs:
http://www.amazon.com/Kent-Hand-Made-General-Grooming/dp/B000YB5NRA/ref=sr_1_cc_1?s=aps&ie=UTF8&qid=1421265415&sr=1-1-catcorr&keywords=Kent+Hand+Made+General+Grooming+Comb+4T

http://www.amazon.com/Kent-Hand-Beard-Moustache-81T/dp/B004K3J6H6/ref=sr_1_6?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1421265374&sr=1-6&keywords=kent+comb

Honest Amish beard oil:
http://www.amazon.com/Honest-Amish-Beard-Balm-Conditioner/dp/B009NNFB0O/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1421265484&sr=1-1&keywords=honest+amish

Firehouse Moustache Wax Dark. I have a dark beard so I use the dark wax. Its really tacky, and when I make my curls they stay well, but if you dont plan on handlebars then I might use something else that isnt so tacky:
http://www.amazon.com/Firehouse-Moustache-Wax-Dark/dp/B004W4PRAI/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1421265579&sr=1-1&keywords=firehouse+mustache+wax

So it is an odd way to do it, at least I think, but this is the style of brush

Beard Brush & Comb Set for Men Care - Gift Box & Friendly Bag - Best Bamboo Grooming Kit for Home & Travel - Great for Dry or Wet Beards - Distributes Balm for Growth & Styling - Adds Shine & Softness https://www.amazon.com/dp/B019FYL7L2/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_JbdbBbHJ35EXN

And this is the wax make sure to get the 2oz so the can is a little wider than the brush

Wild Willie's All Natural Mustache and Beard Grooming Wax For Men - The Only Hard Wax with 7 Organic Ingredients for All Day Strong Hold While Treating Your Mustache at the Same Time. 2 oz. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B018USVCLY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_EddbBb551YWH3

Why mustache wax? - it is much firmer and it stays in the beard longer for all day styling.

NOTE - I have a pretty long beard and have never once experienced the heat itch or summer itch people warn you about. I feel this is due to washing the beard daily with shampoo, conditioning with coconut oil hair conditioner at least 3 days a week, and using this brush and wax mix.

How to - hold the brush in one hand and the wax in the other. Place the wax onto the brush and twist back and forth on the brush making a thin layer.
Starting at the top of your beard brush up until you look like Doctor Robotnik from Sonic the hedgehog.

Again starting at the top brush the top of the beard down into the bottom of the beard but pulling out from the face to get a good length / shape.

Use a separate small brush to then shape your mustache onto the beard for a bit of separation and heavy wax in the mustache. This helps prevent the eating problem a lot of new comers see.

Just what I do, not an expert j

Never thought of making my own... may have to now. Myself, I use Fisticuffs Moustache Wax (bayrum) LINK

u/Sticky907 · 2 pointsr/beards

I had the same issue. Now I'll use a liberal amount and then comb it so it takes that snotty, greasy look out and distributes the wax all the way through it.

I had a chapstick one and it worked great for like 20 minutes. Now I use This.

The primary stuff works great and is pretty damn strong, and if you want to go for the super strength the secondary wax is crazy strong.

u/Jordak_keebs · 2 pointsr/beards

It takes about 3 months of growth to get the mustache long enough to play with its shape.

Definitely invest in some moustache wax. I use [this one] (https://www.amazon.com/CanYouHandlebar-Premium-All-Natural-Secondary-Moustache/dp/B00O5G0IS4/ref=sr_1_5_a_it?ie=UTF8&qid=1495631558&sr=8-5&keywords=canyouhandlebar).

I use the primary wax daily, to keep the mustache out to the sides. I use a bit of the secondary wax on the tips, and to smooth out any stray hairs when I really want it to stand out.

Regarding trimming: I don't like the 'stache to obscure my smile, or obstruct eating. After applying the wax, I will trim any bristles that protrude over the lip.

Clubman Pinaud Moustache Wax.
I figured 11$ for three tubes is worth trying out.

u/citrusysecrets · 2 pointsr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

dude this guy needs that moustache wax so he can stay looking sharp.

u/stacecom · 2 pointsr/Moustache
u/doohicker · 2 pointsr/beards

Trim the beard, considerably. Wax the stache. Make it a handlebar. Try Clubman, neutral.

u/DontCallMeShirlyy · 1 pointr/Moustache

I bought a couple Kent moustache combs on Amazon. I lost the first one, so bought two the second time. If you buy clubman wax (also found on amazon), it comes with a little cheap comb.

On a side note, if you do buy the kent combs on amazon, I'd consider also buying a hair comb or two, as you may be able to get free shipping and the combs are great. I don't work for kent, by the way. ha

u/SmileGuppy · 1 pointr/boston

I just bought this stuff from amazon for my boyfriend and he's a fan. I'm sure it's not the best out there but it might be worth a try for $5.

u/grizzlybrice · 1 pointr/beards

I know "Father's Mustache Wax" is pretty popular. Has worked pretty good for me, but then again my mustache hairs are wiry and go all over, still need to keep up with them to tame them (and get a comb...). Amazon Link to Wax.

u/DrunkBotanist · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon

/u/hidden_intuition, you want? Got a promo code for it.

u/MikeLMP · 1 pointr/Moustache

I've been using this stuff for a while, and I like it, but I wish they made it in brown. It's got a good hold, but if I'm not really careful about working it all in I end up with little yellow flecks throughout my mustache. It's also gone from $10 to $15 since I started buying it, but a tin lasts a long time so that's not a big deal.

I find that for more off beat stuff like that ordering online is the best bet. I buy all my wet shaving stuff online for that reason.

u/facistbobcat · 1 pointr/beards

I got some Clubman's, which I use when I let my mustache grow long. I haven't tried any others so I can't give you a good comparison (but that's one option).

You may want to check out /u/BeerWarden post in the sidebar Styling & controlling your beard, ask over in /r/Moustach, and be sure to check the side bar in /r/Moustach because there is some good stuff there.

u/FierceNorse · 1 pointr/malegrooming

I'm using this: https://www.amazon.com/Can-Handlebar-All-Natural-Secondary-Moustache/dp/B00M1SUW7K

It takes a bit of work (tip: heat it with a blow dryer), but it's worth it. I've tried dozens of mustache waxes and this is hands down the only one I've found that actually holds the stache in place throughout the day, and don't start to sag within a couple of hours.

u/KrunchNmunch · 1 pointr/Moustache

I use a combination of Oregon Wild Hair and Clubmans. During the colder time of year I only use Oregon Wild Hair.

u/Alexander_Supertramp · 1 pointr/beards

I've just started using this. It was given to me as a gift, I don't have anything to compare it to, but I can shape my mustache in the morning and it holds throughout the day.

u/TitaniumTexan · 1 pointr/Random_Acts_Of_Amazon
  1. These sunglasses, because after too much, you're gonna need them the next morning.

  2. This relates, because after I use it, I'll need the riddle item to get rid of the ashes left.

  3. What goes better than a man with the riddle item? If he has a well groomed beard, too.

  4. This is the fastest starfighter in the Rebel fleet, therefore it can really book it.

  5. It can also be called a foot locker, and these go on your feet. Ta-da!

Bonus: This shirt relates, because Rockets blast off from Cape Canaveral. :D

Well some cigar shops also sell gents accessories such as shaving equipment, badger hair brushes, shaving soap and I would get some from there. This is the one I liked and look its on Amazon. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Bounder-Extra-Firm-Moustache-10ml/dp/B009KK6348

I've worn lip-fur for a while, both waxed and unwaxed... I'll give you two suggestions on how to handle the issue.

  • (A) Trim out the center. I know you said you don't want to trim the whole thing, but you might consider trimming out the center. I do this as a matter of course with my stache. I normally wear a handlebar, or an unwaxed handlebar, and this keeps it really looking smooth and intentional. I think there is a trend (as is the whole love for moustaches) these days that tends towards the idiotic impulse that 'bigger is always better'. not the case. An unkempt, wild, untrimmed moustache is really just a blank canvas, and your razor and scissors the brush.

I don't trim out the outside too much, just the occasional stray hair. but the center definitely gets pulled back shorter as I get more towards the center. In your case, this would limit the amount of hair that is bugging the tar out of you, but still give you length for it to blend into the beard.

  • (B) a low-hold moustache wax. I am one of those assholes who believes that not all moustaches should be waxed, and that full beards and waxed moustaches are rarely a good combo. So I'm not going to suggest you go with a big curl on top of your bushy beard. However, a low hold wax (like [Colon Conk's Wax] (www.amazon.com/Colonel-Conk-Moustache-Wax-made-USA/dp/B000RGYUVM) will keep it out of the way for a couple hours at a time, but not give it a thin, compacted look. You'll need to re-apply periodically, and it doesn't hold up to heat very well.

I've been working through a couple of variations of my own moustache waxes, but haven't actually been able to get a good recipe for this yet (and I have actually been trying recently for this exact thing), so I can't really give you good suggestions for a DIY Solution.

That's what I've got man... Good Luck!
