first of it's amazing that you're willing to do a foster to adopt. A couple of people in my family have fostered and it's great. Most people are only willing to adopt and if they consider foster will only foster an infant.

Okay, I saw that you and your husband are a nerdy couple (like us) and I saw this article a while back and thought of it instantly when I saw your post. My favorites are the lost nursery, the doctor who, and the superman (which I'd use as inspiration for a batman) ones.

If you end up going with the lion king nursery you can start with either Mellow Yellow by Behr or Zinnia Gold. I think they're really lion king colors and they're not to bright for a nursery. It's also better than using those sticky decals which look cheap and are horrible quality.

These are amazingggggg, especially at night. I had this one which may go with your theme a little bit but it was absolutely amazing. It comes with a remote for it that you can turn it on from the doorway or outside the room so if the baby is about to fall asleep you don't have to walk in and wind up a traditional mobile to get it going again. Babies R Us also offers this one which is a traditional lion king mobile.

A lion king bedding set would go nicely with some lion king sheets. I like the sheets because they don't just come in lion king character prints. They come with other safari type prints as well. If you don't want to go with the big bedding set and just the sheets you could get this blanket for the crib. A diaper stacker works well especially if you're limited on space. This lamp is a little on the expensive side but is absolutely adorable. These are a nice alternative instead of using the wall stickers. This little snuggler is so cute.

Honestly you and your husband can do the wall art similar to the buzzfeed article I sent you (the superman nursery theme). Just go to a craft store and get a couple of canvases and you guys can paint a couple lion king pictures to add some pop to the walls.

good luck and hakuna matata.

Definately put burp cloths under his head basically whenever you put them down. I used the smallish like 4 inch wide Gerber burp cloths that you can buy in like 4 packs. I would put one under her head and then just toss them in the laundry once they were inevitably ruined.

As for me and my clothes, we used the flannel receiving blankets. they make excellent burp cloths, super absorbent, and the cover ALOT.

I was/am in the exact same boat - first kid, limited funds, starting from scratch, going through reviews and prices drove me insane. It took me probably three months to get my registry together, and, even then, I am still switching things up, lol.

lucieslist.com was invaluable while picking everything out. I highly recommend you check it out.

What we have bought ourselves that fit our tight budget:

Graco Comfy Cruiser Travel System. We had already decided to go with that car seat, given that it seems to be the top-rated budget option, and the stroller ended up being a much-needed bonus. We go on walks a lot, so it works for us. If you don't need the stroller, the seat itself is, I think, only ~$100.

The Pack N Play, which I've heard from literally everyone and their mother is almost a necessity.

Because we don't have an IKEA near us to get our hands on a swanky $99 crib, we bought this DaVinci crib. We still only ended up paying $100 for it, as we found it on sale, however, we would have paid the $200 for it, given that the reviews are good, and, when compared to some other cribs that cost $400 and up, the price isn't bad at all.

As for the rest of the registry, we have on there a Moby wrap (affordable baby wearing, yay!), nail clippers, outlet plugs, nursing pads, a wipes case, a baby tub, baby wash, assorted crib sheets, waterproof crib sheets, Pack N Play mattress, and sheets to go with, crib mattress (we actually bought this one when we found it on sale for $20, and it's just fine), receiving blankets, dirty diaper bags (because we aren't getting a diaper pail, just a small can with a seal-able lid), changing pad, and a cover to go with, pacifiers, Dr. Brown's Gia Nursing Pillow, a bottle brush, bottle warmer, thermometer, booger sucker, camera to monitor the baby, and a few other assorted things that I couldn't really find a definitive "best in class" for, so pick at your own discretion: diaper bag, swaddles (although I've read good things about the Summer Infant brand), bottles (we're going with Phillips Avent), a bouncer (we got this one), and a swing.

I agonized over this stuff for what felt like forever, lol, so I hope it helps you and saves you some hair-pulling. It's all so overwhelming!

My must haves are burp rags and muslin blankets! They get used the most at my house. I’d highly suggest Aden+Anais muslin blankets(honestly I’d buy at least 4 get them at target) both of my kids love them. For burp rags we use receiving blankets since they are bigger and can clean more spit up! Both mine spit up a ton though so I go through maybe 10 a day so I have about 30 receiving blankets. These are the ones we use https://www.amazon.com/Luvable-Friends-Flannel-Receiving-Elephant/dp/B00X230DYU/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?qid=1566835181&refinements=p_n_material_browse%3A369163011&s=baby-products&sr=1-3
. I’d buy them new same with blankets!

We used the Carters flannel swaddles (they call them receiving blankets). The muslin ones are way too big and stretchy and ours also hated the Velcro at first. She started to outgrow the Carters ones around 3 months and we switched her to a Velcro halo sleep sack which she suddenly was ok with. Possibly because she’d been kicking her legs out by that point anyway? Who knows, but that only lasted about a month because we had to stop swaddling her at 4 months anyway.

Here’s what we used:

Simple Joys by Carter's Baby Unisex 7-Pack Flannel Receiving Blankets, Grey/White/Mint, One Size https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01MREOH8C/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_NqUYAbGSAA3B6

ETA: I just wanted to add that they’re softer and thinner than the hospital ones, but they are just as tight.

I found this book Baby Bargains an excellent resource. For new parents-to-be, it does a great job breaking down all the stuff that's out their. The authors explain the relative "need" of each item as well comparing high-end/low-end and how to save money. The book is a surprisingly fun read given the subject matter.

As other commentators have said, you're really best off starting with as little as possible. And only buying what you need as it comes up. A newborn requires surprising little and most of the stuff out their is for the parents not the kid.

Aside from the most obvious basics (car seat, crib, basic clothes, diapers, nourishment, etc) I would strongly recommend large swaddling blankets and a baby carrier (as an example).
