Best advice: get a bell. Something like this. Sounds really dumb, but it is a very specific, tangible reward to be able to ring a bell when they go potty.

You can get bells to hang on your doors. It will probably startle the intruder who has obviously entered quietly previously. Also that way if anyone ever (hopefully never) opens the door when you ARE home you will hear it. Even after you change the locks, if you want. There are bells like they use in stores that you can buy on amazon or walmart. You can also even find collars with bells at a pet store for like $10 (or probably a craft store) if you want something immediately.

You've had a lot of good suggestions here, this isn't the best one, but it's something.

When I first got my dog, I put a little bell (like this) by the back door and would ring it every time I took her out to get her to associate the sound with needing to pee (so she wouldn't just sniff around aimlessly forever like she was prone to do). But after about 2 weeks of doing it, she started ringing the bell on her own whenever she wanted to go out. It's a great system.

We usually use a call bell when we play, but this only works if it is in equal reach of all players. It seems you were playing teams, so maybe it wouldn't work?

We started with the hanging bell but quickly realized that it was rubbing on the door/hitting the wall and didn't want to mark up either. We ordered one of those dinner bells and got him trained pretty quickly on it by holding his paw and hitting the bell before going outside, eventually pointing at the bell so he'd hit it and get a treat before taking him out. Pretty quickly he knew to hit it when wanting to go out. His brother on the other hand...it's been slow progress but he now taps it before going out and sometimes will do it to initiate but he's more of a let-me-bark-in-your-face-until-you-let-me-out kind of dog.
