The tripod collar from the 70-200 f/4 fits the 300mm f/4, so in theory this should be compatible.

I thought that all the white L lenses did. Did you buy yours used?

I could be wrong maybe the lighter ones don't. Thedigitalpicture.com should say.

Alright I looked it up and that's the only lens that doesn't come with one, you can buy one though. Here it is for $144 on amazon. Kinda expensive for what it is and your lens doesn't weigh 3.25 pounds only 1.5 so it's less of an issue.

I'd assume the 2.8 is mostly necessary if you often shoot in large indoor areas. For outdoor scenes, even when they're pretty dark, the f4 is still open enough that any noise can be cleaned up with Aperture / Lightroom without affecting image quality.

If course, if you have the option to try them out, do so.

Having owned the f4 (non IS) for a while, I'd probably go with the IS version. I've missed a number of shots because of a little blur - at 200mm, the slightest nudge, especially when panning, can ruin a shot.

Also, whichever one you buy, pick up a tripod mount for it - your camera body will thank you, and it will be much more stable on the tripod. You can get them for cheap on ebay - mine was $15, and came from China in a week. Or, this Opteka one on Amazon, if you're in the US.

I have a Vivitar 100-300mm f5 that is super heavy. I cannot mount my camera body to a tripod with it attached. So I need to buy a lens mount ring. I measured the diameter at almost exactly 2.5".

I would think something like this would work: http://www.amazon.com/Tripod-Mount-Canon-100mm-Camera/dp/B007VAIV0I/ref=sr_1_1?s=photo&ie=UTF8&qid=1462980838&sr=1-1&keywords=tripod+lens+mount&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011%2Cp_36%3A-1000
But it is 4mm too large. I suppose I could make a shim out of fabric or something, but it would be nice to find one that fits exactly.

Any ideas on the best course of action?

I don't know if it is required, I've shot without it before, it just seemed to make sense to move the center of gravity. This is the one I use and it seems to work pretty well. It is heavy though, but it doesn't seem to have any problems.
