Have you made changes to your lifestyle? Exercise, diet, sleep, being outdoors more, etc? Have you unplugged from social media which feeds narrow, unchallenged thinking? I unsubscribed from political subs as all the Trump and Brexit stuff was becoming overwhelming. I tried to remove advertising from my life, no TV, used ad blockers, and I actively ignore it in other situations. Adverts are created to make you dissatisfied. And so on.

If you have some money or can save up, getting away can help. In south america, or east asia, really cheap hostels, simple food, nothing extravagant, nothing touristy (no elephant rides, or white water rafting), you can live on $10-20 a day travelling round. That's cheaper than staying at home. A change of scene, and some time out from your normal day-to-day can help you get perspective, shake you out of old habits, create new ones, make you more self-reliant, create a sense of achievement (not just in the EA sense), but seriously.

I said in another comment that I recommended a book, The Road Less Travelled. The first half at least is good for anyone, good psychology, the second half is perhaps too spiritual for some, but I like it. Put it on a wishlist and I'll buy it for anyone who asks.

As the author said:

> Entering psychotherapy is an act of the greatest courage.

You have my admiration for starting CBT.

Sincerely, /r/sgmctabnxjs.

It wouldn't do any harm to read, many people have found it helpful. Just don't get involved with him or the community, it's rage porn escapism that'll leave you mentally worse off. Just look at how awful the posts in his subreddit are - leftists are just as miserable, but generally more out of despair and empathy than rage. (There are many exceptions, I know, I've been one more than a few times.)

A friend recommended this book: https://smile.amazon.com/Make-Your-Bed-Little-Things/dp/1455570249. Probably gets the same point across but in half the pages.

The only one I've found helpful is The Antidote. The author's accent is pleasant, it's a good audiobook to walk around with if it hasn't yet gotten too cold where you are. Or just to play mindless video games like Diablo or Katamari Damacy with. Here's a 30min talk he did, worth giving a shot if stoicism has ever resonated with you.

And I might as well throw this talk out as well. Not necessarily productive, but it was very comforting and validating for me after having been long burnt out on Alan Watts platitudes.

But back to jbp - again, the book resonates with a lot of people (I think he functions as a stand-in father figure for many), I'm sure you can pick out what's helpful and leave the rest if you want. His cultural criticism is laser-focused on diversity and his fan base is continually upset, though, so I think there are more constructive writers out there.

This is getting way too long, sorry, but adding one more link: for anyone who feels they might be in an upswing right now and receptive to "you should try harder" advice, I enjoyed this blog post.

I think porn and masturbation are just one facet of the monster of instant gratification people are consumed by. If the beginning sounded good to you, maybe there's something to it then. Don't dismiss it out of hand-- you would only be doing yourself a disservice.

Some books that may be interesting to you:

Waking Up by Sam Harris (especially if you are more of a skeptic)

The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle

Mindfulness in Plain English

Think and Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill

There are a lot of different ways to get in, and the only real requirements are reading comprehension and knowing how to use google.

Here's what I did: Read this book, took the A+ 801 and 802 on the same day, and applied for tech support jobs. I landed a decent phone tech support job with my second interview. Start to finish, it took about a month. I only made $15/hour to start with.

I immediately started using linux as my daily OS on all of my personal devices, and my skills really started to take off. After a year, I got a raise to 42k. Then I jumped to devops and started at 55k. I've increased my salary by roughly 10k every year ever since.

It's 'cause the internet has shifted the capacity of our brains away from deep focus and towards shallow multitasking. It's why we do shit like close Reddit on our computers then pull out our phones and open Reddit again without thinking about it. If you're really curious to learn more about it, try to stay focused long enough and read The Shallows; If you're really interested in pushing back then look into meditation.

This book has helped me so much with that.

Not everything is relatable but it is still very good.

Please text 741741 crisis text line. You will have someone to talk to in real time over text. There are millions of people who feel like you do. You are not as alone as you think.

Edit: try this book as well. It can make a huge difference. So can similar books. Knowledge is power.

Yup! Just finished a book about him a few weeks back. (He was 26 when he left though I'm guessing it's what you're refencing).

I can't reccomend this book enough to anyone interested. Link

Have you ever read Jon Krakauer's "Into the Wild" ? Your story reminds me of the book.
