You can usually download files from the phone as long as you enabled USB debugging which I hope you did. If you have password protected or encrypted your phone, then it would have to be unlocked to do this.

Some people on another forum have said:

Buy a adapter that plugs into the micro usb, the other end of cable is usb. Connect a mouse and you are able to unlock your phone with a swipe. (This would be as long as you have not set up your phone with a pattern.) A USB Keyboard might work with a numeric or regular password. I have never tried this but it may work?

Ideally $10-15. I can do a bit more if needed.

I haphazardly ordered a cable from Amazon ($7, so not a huge deal) yesterday, that is shielded and recommended by someone who faced a similar issue. Unfortunately it's not 4-pin like you suggested, so it may be useless to me. Whoops
