I hear you. I'm worried about cracking the case. There are four plastic clips that hold it together that aren't really meant to be removed, but apparently can be done relatively easily if one is careful. That said, I have a bad history with things that "can be done, if done carefully."
But basically you just image a back-up of your system (you just need a 4 GB SD or USB), then swap the drive, then boot off the back-up, and you have your original system good to go but with more storage. Then you can install Crouton direct to your SSD and get a big speed benefit. Not bad for $55!
I can't really speak to the difference in speed class as I only tried it with the card I have, but it ran well. I think with the price you may as well get a fast card. Here's what I'm using, I got it for $17 on sale but its still only $22 right now:

Awesome. So just to be clear -- do you have crouton installed? Or are you [somehow] running everything on the ChromeOS side?
I just ordered a shiny new Acer c720 (which just fell $30 in price this morning!), and plan on using it entirely as a coding machine on the go -- Anaconda, git, R, and maybe one or two others are really all I need. So your suggestion is great.
What was your setup process? I'd be very tempted to do the same myself.
Thanks!
I have been looking at the JetDrives by Transcend.
These two are available, but I don't know which one would fit in the Acer C720 SD card slot:

JetDrive 350 - http://www.amazon.com/Transcend-JetDrive-Storage-Expansion-TS64GJDL350/dp/B00K73NT3A
I am eager to purchase one of these so I can install and configure Crouton to run Android Studio. Does anyone know if these would fit in the Acer C720?
Thanks!
Hello, I'm a relative newcomer myself.
A few tips, having used FALCO in the past. I would buy a much larger SSD and upgrade it. Beyond unscrewing a lot of screws, it's not that hard. There are guides on Youtube for how to do that. Here is the 256GB model I purchased that worked just fine. You will need that Chrome OS backup you made to reinstall it after.
I'd recommend installing XFCE rather than Unity. It's more configurable (in my opinion) and will fly on that hardware, which Unity or Plasma might not. It also has a smaller footprint.
I would also start with the newer Xenial rather than Trusty. Even though it's unsupported, many here (myself included) have used it without hiccups (other than needing to lauch software centers with the gksu root). Doing that with XFCE also gets you the newest variant of that DE, 4.12. Here is command line I used:
sudo sh ~/Downloads/crouton -r xenial -t keyboard,xfce-desktop
Keyboard auto-sets up the Chrome OS keys (volume, brightness, etc) to be activated while holding down the "search" key at the same time. The desktop modifier starts you with some basic software (which you can uninstall later if you don't want it).
Regarding that site you linked to, there are some newer ones. I'll take a look.
Good luck! Let us know if you need more help.
Ok awesome! So I saw PNY was having a sale on microSDs today. Would something like this be good enough to run my chroot from?

> However I haven't done anything more resource intensive than a few steam games (Portal 2, Borderlands 2), which of course were limited by the processor but still ran surprisingly well.
So, I have an HP 14 Chromebook (its exactly the same as the c720 except with 4gb of ram). Borderlands 2 is on sale over at Steam, and this thread came up on google.
Is it really playable, or is it like, just barely playable enough that if you're desperate to play Borderlands 2 you'll put up with it?
> I later found out that it was happening because I was using a USB 2.0, and when I made a new chroot on a SDXC card with higher transfer speeds, all my problems (or at least those regarding that error and the subsequent crashing) went away.
Yeah, it's already on an SDXC card actually, this one (150mb/s)
I wonder if the 300mb/s one (that only goes up to 32gb capacity) would be a lot better?
>Also, I couldn't find any output/logfile either, to answer your question.
Couldn't get Wine working properly with Wily anyway so went back to Trusty - it does feel like it's a lot quicker and snappier too anyway.
Yes, I just upgraded my acer c720 to a 128gb ssd, and I have 110gb available for linux. For an easy install, I would recommend using code starter's installation scripts, it allows you to determine how much space you want for your linux partiton.
Also, here is a link to a $55 128gb m.2 ngff ssd
Edit: I am in the wrong sub, the code starter scripts will install using chrubuntu, which will set up a chrome os/ubuntu dual boot, not crouton.
i also came from a c720 and tried a lot of chromebooks since then, namely:
maybe i'm just nostalgiac for the c720 but the c740 with the broadwell celeron has been fantastic for me. not too much not too little and dirt cheap ($150) when bought refurbished from acer: https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Chromebook-C740-C4PE-Dual-core-Refurbished/dp/B01BPOYQ8G?
I just ordered Transcend 128GB this myself.
According to the reviews runs a but warm but Transcend said they're going to fix the issue on the next update.

Do you have a SD card slot?
This is what I use:
That way I can leave it plugged in when I lug my chromebook around. By selecting a different microSD storage size and card speed you can adapt how much you want to spend.
By following this guide you can make the SD card the default storage place for your crouton chroots.

Would this be any use?
I use a low-profile USB 3.0 flash drive and have my crouton installation on it and set up a symbolic link to the drive so that I don't need to always point the scripts to the right location.
