Ah, Should be a pretty easy fix then. Get yourself some binder paper repair stickers (like so http://www.amazon.com/Charles-Leonard-Reinforcements-Self-Adhesive-Labels/dp/B00342VCK8/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1335407980&sr=8-2 ) and add them onto the stem, over the threads, until the stem is straight when fully screwed on. I have done this on 5 or so estate pipes that I have and they all smoke perfectly after the fix.
Edit: also, a more risky fix is to apply heat to the base of the threads (where it anchors into the stem) and rotating the threads until they are properly aligned.. I've never tried this one, but I've been told it works quite well if you have a stead hand and are extremely careful. I'd recommend the first procedure though, as long as you don't mind having those stickers on your stem.

It smokes reasonably well, but not quite as good as my other pipes. Also the stem is a bit bent to the side. Still for the price it is pretty good. You can find other probably better church wardens later.
Personally I wouldn't: if the pipe wasn't made to be smoked, who knows what materials went into it? Plenty of woods will poison you, not to mention paints, preservatives, etc...
Also, the bowl looks very thin-walled. I'd expect to burn through it quickly if I tried smoking it.
Finally, drilling out that curved stem would be a major challenge. I'm not entirely sure it's even possible. If I were determined to do it, I'd first straighten the stem, then drill it, and then re-bend it.
A long churchwarden ain't cheap -- expect to spend about a hundred bucks -- but that's definitely what I'd recommend. Mr. Brog makes one with the name Gandalf stamped on it in runes, but there are lots out there to choose from.

The micro mesh can be a bit hard to find...any specialty wood working store should carry it, but it's available online.

A cheaper method would be to start with a very fine steel wool, and then use a nail buffer, which is essentially a nail file with micro mesh on it...the "shine" side will be the finest. Both of these could likely be found in Walmart, etc.
I currently use a Xikar pipe lighter you might wanna check those out. This exact one to be exact.

This sub is full of nonsensical bullshit. I can't head that off at the pass, but I can correct it when it shows up.
The question of cigarette filters is well-researched at this point. The exposure of cigarette company archives during the suits leading up to the MSA gives us decades of evidence that they were always decorative.
The cigarette companies earnestly wished to produce a filter that yielded improved health outcomes, but it wasn't feasible. The best they could do was an acetate filter dipped in a solution to turn it brown when exposed to smoke :(

Is that the dual jet/ soft flame one? I just tossed out my 3rd one of those that died on me.
ZPlus makes a side opening soft flame butane I bought last week, we'll see how long that one lasts. My experience with these things is they're either DOA or they work for a month then just quit.
