A club like Barcelona represents a centuries-old ideal of Catalan freedom from the oppressive monarchists of Real Madrid. Celtic are Republican Catholics vs the Loyalist Protestant Rangers, and in Eastern Europe you get communist vs anti-communists, vs militarists vs secret police etc. Your club represents and validates your identity and belief system. This is one of the reasons why there is so much passion for the game.

There's a whole book covering the college team he was on called Scoreboard, Baby. It's a much longer version of that article (it's by the same authors). It's well written, but reading it was difficult. As someone who really enjoyed college and still enjoys college football, it was a real reality check. That guy is fucking disgusting.

Oh here's the guy I was originally looking for but couldn't find: Kurt Wise. He has a Ph.D. in geology from Harvard, maybe the best school in the entire world, and yet completely rejects all the overwhelming geological evidence there is that contradicts creation - he's a young earth creationist. And he has also written a book full of lies and bullshit:
