Use a bucket instead, with a slight taper so the bottom diameter is a bit smaller than the top.
Cut a hole in the bottom of the bucket about an inch smaller in diameter than the bottom of the bucket. Make sure to leave about an inch of the bottom intact around the hole.
Cover the top of the bucket with plastic sheeting, about as thick as a zip top bag. Fix rubberbands or small bungee cords from the sides of the bucket to the middle of the plastic sheeting.
Fire by pulling back on the bungees and letting them go. This snaps the plastic sheeting down, basically doing the same thing as whacking the sides of the box.

I have some Airzookas (Amazon link) that are fun. My dogs have wised up, though, and run when they see them.
I have a antique quack “medical” device that looks like an innocent wood box, only when you touch the metal ends while the handle is cranked, it gives you a mild electrocution (like a static charge).
