Yup, second hand is pretty awkward for gifts.

You could consider the Asus MeMO Pad ME172V. Asus also make the Nexus 7 so I guess it's kind of comparable, but the reviews in that vein of comparison aren't too favourable since the screen is criticised, as is the overall speed of the device due to the chip used.

That said, the reason for the difference is that it's cheaper than a Nexus 7 and Asus still have to turn a profit off this thing, whilst the N7 is basically being sold at cost by Google to get Android in people's hands. That's why the Nexus line is so appealing, you get such bang for your buck. If an N7 is out of the question, I'd hope this thing could contend with other for-profit tablets in its price range, so it may well be the best choice.

I'm not sure what Square is, but if it's a random Android app, I don't see why it wouldn't work. Just quickly check with a device-specific subreddit or /r/AndroidQuestions or so before purchase to be sure.

I just wanted to show you that Asus has a product that may meet your criteria as well. You could also go for a Ainol Novo7 or so, but given the prices, specs and brands of these two tablets that are worth considering, that's probably not necessarily unless you need HDMI video output.

The Nexus 7, which is very popular, doesn't have a rear-facing camera in the first place, if my memory serves me correctly. That would explain the low resolution: it's not intended for regular videos, only for chat.

Your family may be a little bit hesitant to answer your question because of the budget. They may fear recommending a device and having it turn out to be a dud. Do keep in mind upgrades won't be made available by Google for these devices, although Samsung and especially Asus have been relatively good when it comes to tablet updates.

What you really need to do is watch some example videos for these devices. Here are some quick examples:

I wouldn't pay more than $100 for a 2012 Nexus 7, even new.

You can get an ASUS Memo 7" (http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/asus-memo-pad-hd/4505-3126_7-35781396.html http://www.amazon.com/ASUS-MeMO-ME172V-A1-GR-7-0-Inch-Tablet/dp/B00BDS25VA/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1375467486&sr=1-1&keywords=asus+memo) for basically that price, and it's virtually the exact same product.

That said, just buck up and get the Nexus 7 2013. :)
