Any possibility of a good pair of headphones for concentrating? For a few months I was sharing my home office with two other people, and good headphones make good neighbors, so to speak.

I have a pair of ATH-M50X which provide most of the isolation and good audio quality without the standing-wave pressure of active cancellation.

At my last job when we moved from a six-person room to a corral in a sea of cubicles, I pushed my boss to procure a set of noise cancelling headphones. They helped, but the pressure of active noise-cancellation was unpleasant after several hours. In that environment there was only so much to be done.

Hypervigilance is rough. Do earplugs help you at all? I don't go anywhere without these earplugs. I keep them in their little bag on my keychain. Church on Sunday, street food, festivals, farmers markets, comic conventions, movie theaters - anywhere I know there will be noise and people, I wear them. Almost no exceptions.* They're not perfect, but they make a big difference for me.

*The only exceptions are times when I wear noise-canceling headphones instead. :) I've used these for several years, and they were a game-changer for me. Sometimes I wear them at the office just to cut out office chatter, since I work in a cubicle. I wear them at the gym, the library, in airports / train stations / etc. A lot of times, I don't even listen to anything - I just use the active noise-canceling to turn down the volume on everything around me. But listening to a good audio book or some happy music can help distract me if the noise around me is making me anxious. Best of luck finding a solution that helps you!

I tried them in a Target and didn't find them that good at blocking noise or that amazing audio quality wise. I'd recommend checking out some other options. I'm in a pickle.

I live in an urban area, and the noise from the cars on the street gives me migraines. I bought The Audio Technica ATH-ANC9 QuietPoint and they worked great! The active noise cancelling did the trick. Such a relief...

...Until a week later when something must have come loose inside, and every step I took was punctuated with a low rattling sound. Far from ideal. I returned them.

I need active noise-cancelling headphones that can tolerate me taking them outside. They also need to be amazingly comfortable, because I intend to wear them most of my waking hours.

Help! My poor pounding skull needs your expertise.

When going for noise cancelling Bose is highly regarded. Can personally vouch for quiet comfort 25

Samsung Level Over-ear. Fantastic, very comfortable, very easy to travel with.

Its not that iems aren't isolating but it won't be as good isolation as the above mentioned headphones. I personally prefer sound quality over silence so I would go the iems you mentioned or my msr7s. Like I said virtually everything but the loudest sounds will be quiet.

It's worth mentioning there are some noise cancelling iems but I've never heard one so I can't speak to the quality.

Budget- about $100. Maybe a little higher if they are absolutely fantastic and $100 is crap.

Requirements for Preferred tor Isolation - I mainly want these for working out, and on flights. I don't want to be "that passenger" but I don't really need it at the gym.

Will you be using these Headphones in Public? Yes.

Preferred Type of Headphone - I have "special" ears that are not compatible with ear buds (I own several pairs, and they are always falling out.) I would like over the ear. But they can't fall off.

Preferred Tonal balance - overall balanced/midrange

Past headphones - I have a drawerful of earbuds that do not work for me. I used the kind with foam on the ends, with slings around the back of your ear, another pair with several ends--nothing doing. but have been told that these will not stay on my head if I am using an elliptical trainer, etc. I do not run, or jump around. It is mainly machines.

Preferred Music - Pop, Jazz, Hip-hop, Classic Rock, rhythym and blues, soul, trip hop, ...I like a lot of things.

Improved set-up It stays on my head while working out (and on a plane) has terrific sound, doesn't piss off whoever is next to me, and doesn't damage my eardrums.

Hey guys, I was just recently introduced to the world of headphones by a friend, and I have been doing some research on what I want. I would appreciate any help you guys could give me.

So far the only reference point I have is the Audio-Technica ATH-M50s, so you can probably see that I don't have much experience.

Here is what I want:

I can't claim to have used every headphone on the market, but I previously used the Audio-Technica QuietPoint and was quite pleased with the sound quality and noise cancelling ability. They are wired though (don't need to wire them just to cancel noise obviously) so no bluetooth if that is important to you.

Audio-Technica makes good mid-range products and these are a great value at 100 dollars in my opinion. I used them for several years until I upgraded to the Sennheiser HD-1, but those are above your budget:

I had an older-generation pair of these audio-technica headphones and I really liked them.

TL;DR: I like my noise-cancelling headphones, but I want something passive for my record player and home use. Something with decent bass and crisp highs in the ~$50-150 range, but noise isolation isn't really necessary.

• Budget - I'd like to stay in the ~$100 area, but I can go up to around $150.
  
• Source - My laptop on occasion, but probably my old-ish Onkyo receiver for my old Sony turntable (seen here) for the most part.
  
• Requirements for Isolation - None, really. This is mainly for listening to stuff at home, mostly on my turntable. I have another set of cans for public use.
  
• Will you be using these Headphones in Public? - Probably not.
  
• Preferred Type of Headphone - Full-sized. Open-back or closed-back doesn't really matter.
  
• Preferred tonal balance - I'd prefer something with more bass, honestly. "Warm" would be a good way to describe it. I thought, as a musician and music lover, I'd like a more "natural" or "professional" sound signature, but when I tried the AKG K240's and Sony MDR-7506's, I felt like a lot of bass was missing. They'd sound ok with the strings, acoustic guitars, and vocals on Beck's Sea Change, but the bass on Yeezus and Run the Jewels 3 just came out as an annoying buzz.
  
• Past headphones - Uh, see above. I currently own and will continue to use my Audio-Technica ATH-ANC9's because I'm a college student and the noise cancelling is a lifesaver when I need to study in public.
  
• Preferred Music - Since I'll mostly be using this for my turntable, most of the vinyl I collect (or, at least, that I listen to) is mellow, organic stuff: bossa nova, folk, jazz, etc. However, I also have some more energizing and digital-sounding records, like David Bowie's Blackstar and Frank Ocean's Blonde, that I listen to frequently, and I also love Carly Rae Jepsen's Emotion and Run the Jewels' whole discography (which I don't yet have on vinyl). Besides my record player, I usually listen to this Spotify playlist when I study. And here's a 5x5 of my top Last.fm scrobbles from the past month.
  
• What would you like to improve on from your set-up - Less noise cancelling, and a more open sound but with some good bass as well. The noise cancelling on my ANC9's is great, but sometimes the hiss gets a little annoying and they get a little claustrophobic. Also, going through battery after battery to power them gets annoying.

If I were to buy a pair of noise-cancelling headphones today, it would be the Audio Technica ATH-ANC9. The noise cancelling is good (not quite as good as the Bose, I concede, but still well within the realm of 'good' and should be more than enough for most people), and the sound is far better than any of Bose's offerings.

Used these on several flights. They have three different modes of noise cancellation. Not sure how they compare to the standard Bose offerings, but I was able to get them for far cheaper than the Bose alternatives and they worked wonders on my 16 hr flights.

sadly i haven't tried many active noise cancelling headphones apart from the beats, monsters, sony and bose. and apart from the bose, i didn't really like any of them. never got to try the bose with anything base heavy so i can't really recommend them yet either (also very expensive and never on sale).

sorry that i can't be more helpful. also i understand about on-ear. can't stand on-ear headphones. can't stand buds even moreso.

They have great sound, come with a nice case and are really comfortable. I got them for $135 on buydig.com, full retail is $199

Too bad you didn't get these instead. Better sound, a more reputable company, and $100 cheaper.
