I have read about some weird video permissions rules with HDMI cables where the content is blocked due to copyright issues. I have no idea why this would be the case for you but just getting a cheap HDMI splitter resolves the issue.

I'm not exactly sure how it goes about switching between which device is the display. As far as I understand it does it based off which device turns on first.
I would go with an hdmi splitter similar to this and have one to your vive and one to your projector. Nothing else would have to be changed!
