Get a decent tripod, one that collapses fairly small and one of these

> Will this camera do justice?

No. It has a maximum resolution of 720p and no mic jack for external sound. With a $150 budget you can do better. As I see it, you have two options.

OPTION 1 - SMART PHONE

Your phone is probably a better video camera than a Coolpix. If you have an iPhone, you can get started by downloading FiLMiC Pro ([$8 from iTunes] (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/filmic-pro/id436577167?mt=8&at=1000l8mT)). If you have an Android phone, you can download [Cinema FV-5, which is $2.49 right now on Google Play] (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.flavionet.android.cinema.pro&hl=en).

These apps will allow you to control aspect ratio, white balance, exposure, resolution and frame rates - turning your phone into a pretty good approximation of a camcorder.

FiLMiC Pro was used for this feature film shot entirely on iPhones:

You can get various mobile phone tripod mounts for not a huge amount of money like this that will let you attach your phone to any video or photography tripod. Different adapters support different size smartphones so make sure you check what size your phone is before you buy one.

You've pretty much nailed the eaisiest way to do this by doing it in two takes. For the first take you'll have you and your dog in shot reading to the camera. For the second shot, mount the camera so it's looking over your shoulder down towards the book and your feet.

You won't need to actually read the story the second time through, just leave the pages open long enough so that there's a good amount of time on screen (perhaps with your finger following the words)

It will help if you've got a desk lamp or something you can use to light up the pages of the book a bit.

The effect you need to do is called picture-in-picture (good guess!) and most video editing applications will be able to do this for you. If you happen to be using a Mac, you can use iMovie for this. Otherwise you could use Resolve which is a bit overkill but is also free and supports picture in picture editing.

However, another approach would be to not use picture in picture and instead cut between the two angles as required. That would probably look a bit better and would ensure that the text was big enough to be readable on the page. Given that it'll be watched on something with a rather small screen that might get you better results.

Part of the key is natural light. Take the pictures next to an open window or door at a favorable time of day.

Do you have a tripod? If so you can just get an adapter like this

If not, there are some inexpensive ones like this one

Personally, I'd probably get a regular tripod and an adapter, as it will be more flexible for use with other things, like video cameras or DSLR's.

I've got one of these, there may be better solutions but I've had zero problems using it.

I'd suggest looking for a tripod head rather than a specific tripod. That way if you decide to get a DSLR or mirrorless later on, you could still use the general tripod with a different head.

I'd suggest this tripod or something similar, just because you can remove and adjust the center column. There are cheaper ones out there as well, just read some reviews and look around.

Thank you! I bought a cheap adjustable cell phone tripod adaptor from a local camera shop. I think it was only $10, something similar to this: http://www.amazon.com/Cell-Phone-Tripod-Adapter-Smartphone/dp/B00OS9E6AO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1452746293&sr=8-2&keywords=cell+phone+tripod+adapter

For this photo: https://www.instagram.com/p/BAPFtaAgSej/ I propped my elbows against some furniture and used a 1s timer to reduce hand shake from pressing the camera button.

Some consistency with the thumbnails would be a great idea, I think. For a logo or a brand of some sort, if you've got no ideas at all, why not CBTV with your font that you've chosen for the channel logo, and have that always persist in the bottom left corner? I am pretty bad at thumbnails myself though, so just take my advice only if you've got absolutely nothing to go off of lol.

I saw somewhere above that you said you're bad with colors - try this website: http://paletton.com/#uid=30e0u0ktyE3ilLQnRH5CxuVDqnN at the top, there's some icons to click on - go for the one that says triad. that will give you a really nice and easy way of figuring out which colors compliment each other to help design your thumbnail elements.

Yeah, I think less weird would work wonders haha! I showed your video to my partner this morning and she loved it and thought it was very cute. While rewatching it we noticed that, if you can, you could definitely afford to upgrade the video quality of the face cam. It looks like you're using an ordinary webcam. I have a cheap suggestion that might help with better video quality - provided you already have a fairly up to date smartphone. Just buy a tripod and one of these - https://www.amazon.com/Cell-Phone-Tripod-Adapter-Smartphone/dp/B00OS9E6AO

As long as your lighting is good, you'd have great video quality for the cost of basically just the tripod. I hope that helps man. Cheers!

I have one that is that same size and unfortunately the Nexus 6p won't fit inside without snapping out. The one you linked might be a good reference to figure out the dimensions needed though.

All of my videos were done with my phone (earlier videos on a Galaxy S2, and newer ones on my Note 5). I have one of these that I got for about 5.00 at a car dealership. It allows me to mount my phone to an actual camera tripod.

And I would LOVE you see you pick the Beset to control. I have only ever picked on Best to control, and I swear it was more luck than anything. Haha!

Honestly, for $300 I would recommend to just get two of these and put your phones on there rather than buying a new camera. Most phones nowadays released from the past ~3-4 years should be as good as, if not better than any camera that you'll find for $300. Other then that, I also believe the gopro hero5 session or the hero4 may be good choices as well if you are in need of environmentally resistant, versatile cameras that can shoot time lapse.
