I always felt better having an alarm system. We have Simplisafe--I think it is $250 for the starter set and should be enough equipment for a one bedroom apartment. It is $25 a month for monitoring with no contract, and you can add on stuff like carbon monoxide and smoke detectors. We have a temperature detector that will alert us if the temp gets below 55 degrees (for the pipes and the cats) if we are out of town. You can take it with you when you move and expand it. I've had mine for almost 10 years, starting with a 2 bedroom condo and now a 3 bedroom house.

Make sure you have a fire extinguisher. They make small ones now that you can keep under the kitchen sink. Also make sure you have a smoke detector and carbon monoxide detector. And a fire ladder if you are on the second floor. Can you tell I am afraid of fires? :)

Find a good pet sitter--one that is insured. I had a friend take care of my cat when I was on vacation...and then she left her in the apartment during a hurricane. I paid someone after that. No one cares as much about your pet as you do. Now it's nice to call someone in an emergency and not be an imposition.

Basically anything you'd have while living with roommates. I think some women neglect things like tools (a basic set of screwdriver, hammer, even a small drill is enough), CO2 monitor, and crockpot. On those same safety lines, I have an extra lock on top of my sliding glass door in the back, and I have intermittent timers for my lights so even when I'm gone, it doens't look like the place is empty. Oh, and a peephole for your front door. I'm kind of paranoid, but i NEVER answer my door if I don't know what's on the other side.

Also, get to know at least one of your neighbors so you have someone to call if you need someone to check up on your place.

Worse case scenario, your computer can literally catch on fire and it can spread like any other fire. The better the PSU, the lesser the chance for anything catastrophic. However, even super crappy PSUs are unlikely to catch fire. When a high quality PSU fails, most likely the only thing that will happen is the PSU itself stops working. When a low quality PSU fails, it might take some other parts with it, but probably won't catch on fire. So your PSU is very unlikely to actually catch on fire, but it never hurts to be prepared. You can buy a cheap fire extinguisher from amazon for like 15-20 bucks and just keep it near your desk. For example: This traditional extinguisher or something smaller/easier to use Hope this helps.

I have no idea where you can buy flame retardant seat covers, but here's another idea. Why not just buy a regular seat cover from whatever store you choose, and keep a small fire extinguisher in the car if you are worried about potential fires? These I found on Amazon can fit in your glovebox.

Edit: Found this. It's made of neoprene which I think is fire-resistant so you can't burn through it.
