I'd buy or rent one of these, turn on circuits, pull off cover panels on junction boxes and look for hot spots.

At this point, there are roughly three categories:

The really nice ones, which are extremely expensive and fairly delicate (for example, FLIR's 1020 has a 1024x768 thermal sensor, and costs $44K).
The "workhorse" ones, which are fairly expensive, and well ruggedized. If you're building a piece of equipment that costs a few thousand dollars, and is going to be used outdoors, on a job site, etc., making it a few hundred dollars more expensive to improve durability is a very good trade-off. This is where you get things like the FLIR E-series, which costs a few thousand USD (depending on version), and has some serious rubber padding around everything important.
Consumer-grade ones. This includes things from a couple hundred dollars for a phone add-on, such as the Seek Thermal one; I would also include things like the FLIR TG 165 due to its price-point. There's also the Cat S60, which sticks the same FLIR Lepton sensor into a smartphone.

The bottom category is how most of us with thermal systems to mess around with have them.
