There are lots of options, but for just getting started I suggest:

Hatchbox PLA 3D 1.75 mm. This particular one is black, but get the color(s) that suit your fancy!

I suggest this one because:

• PLA is easy and forgiving to print with and doesn't cause crazy fumes. (Still print in ventelated area though). If this is your first experience with 3D printing - stick with PLA for at least a spool or two!
  
• Hatchback hasn't given me issues yet. Good quality.
  
• Price is Right
  
• 1.75mm fits the standard nozzle the printer comes with.
  
• Hatchback was my first - so I'm irrationally attached to them
  
  There are dozens of brands of PLA and most of them will work just fine. Feel free to experiment. I use $20/kg as my standard "this is an OK price" limit for standard PLA
  
  Be more mindful when switching material types. PLA is forgiving, but hates heat/sun. Its also not overly strong. ABS is apparently strong, but a pain to print on these monoprice printers (requires high temps) and the fumes are toxic. Wood was fun - until it clogged my nozzle. Apparently you need a larger nozzle to print wood without clogging frequently. Whoops!
  
  Anyways, when getting new filament:
  
  
• Get a different color/brand because it's fun or it fits your needs. Variety is the spice of printing!
  
• Get a different material type (PLA/ABS/Nylon/etc) when your print requires a different type of material. Research the material requirements first to make sure your printer and setup can handle it (heat/ventilation requirements).
  
  
  Side note: store your filament is a dry place. 3D material tends to absorb water from overly humid air. When the filament does this, it doesn't print as well. I keep mine in air tight storage containers with one of these Renewable Dehumidifiers

I honestly have become a Hatchbox fan. My prints come out much better this time. I use an external spool and feed, and print on the back of blue painter's tape rubbed with rubbing alcohol. With the M3D you have to cheat a bit to use non-M3D filament. Put in any 3-digit filament code and then go to the settings, click on advanced, then custom temperatures. Hatchbox is used at a lower temp than M3D; I have mine set to 210 (the highest recommended). Here's the spool I use:

It sounds crazy, but since I started using these products I have had zero failed prints. I also promise that I'm not a shill for Hatchbox lol. The product just works for me.

Where are you buying your filament? Hatchbox is $23 shipped, and inexpensive $11 stuff shows up on ebay with fairly decent reviews.

Would either of these work?

If I make my own filaments, how much filament would I waste? I assume it's quite possible to screw up making filament just the same way a print can fail.

Also, is it possible to make specialty filaments? Translucent? Nylon? I haven't used much else other than Hatchbox Black PLA, but I'd be quicker to venture out if it was cheaper to do so.

I've gone through several kilos of hatchbox and never had a problem. it has become my go-to filamentc for pla, abs, and petg, all the materiels they sell are just solid and it's hard to beat the price.

$10/lb is $22/kg so why not just buy actual plastic filament that won't destroy your hotend?

I need to read more to understand the z switch and z screws you are referring to. I have no idea what those are. I assembled by watching some channel on youtube do it. It was like a tales from the crypt vibe channel.

As much as it sucks, I probably need to completely disassemble it and start over. There has to be something done incorrectly for it to be this difficult. I am definitely going to get one of those gauges before I get back into. I returned the springs today and ordered different springs on amazon. When they get here, I might sit down one night and try again.

As for the bed, the glass one I got was scratched to hell from those stupid springs. I didn't know I had to raise or lower whatever switch you were talking about. Like I said earlier, I already ordered a SD card reader so that will be a definite mod. As for the octopi, is there a list somewhere on this subreddit of everything you need to purchase before starting? I have a raspberry pi at the house. I originally bought it to build a retropie but I haven't gotten around to it yet. I could use it for the printer if needed. I really like the idea of remote printing, having a webcam to see the print live, and putting a part on there that stops the print if there is a filament issue.

I have the same setup than you. However I never use the fan, I think it makes the prints curl up.
I'm about to run out of the filament that came with the kit and just ordered Hatchbox 1.75mm Black PLA , I hope it works well.

I had not trouble with the one that came with the kit, I used 208 C.

No I don't think so, but poor extrusion consistency could be why my print quality goes down when I go under 0.60 layer height or slow speeds down below 20mm/s. Both of these changes would theorectically decrease extrusion pressure and cause problems with poor extrusion.

One possible solution to poor extrusion is an upgrade to the extrusion gear. Another option for making extrusion more consistent and smooth is to increase temperature.

Unfortunately I can't say myself what printing with bad filament will do to your overall print as I have never had any go that far. Got worried with one but it still prints just fine. Maybe someone can chime in with that brand, or you should look up what others say about that brand. Seems like things arent quite right with it though. I'd suggest buying a different brand and try that out to see if it performs better. It's possible that you got a bad spool straight out of the gate. I'd personally suggest the hatchbox brand $20 for 1kg spool on amazon. And they seem to be pretty highly recommended across the board. Always got really good prints on mine with hatchbox so long as my settings were right.

I was having issues with 150mm/s in the advanced settings travel speed. Lowering that to 45~60 (I use 45, people suggest 60) helped me with the stringies. You can try that.

Have you actually measured your filament yet?

Edit: lowering temperature will help w/ the over-extrusion that I was talking about. Lowering flow rate does too, but usually temperature comes first, then make sure filament diameter is right, then flow.

Multi Material Extrusion - You can choose color. I don't OWN many color, as it's 15-20 dollars a spool. (2.2 pounds of material I think per spool)

I am paying the invoice on the kit today, which means I will recieve the kit in a week or so. I built a kit just like this last year, it took twelve hours over a three day weekend and I didn't use a chair. I eyeballed the measurements and it worked wonderfully.

So, assuming this time is going to be similar, I need a week to have it built, i need a few weeks to calibrate it (installing a glass top means I can see my reflection on the bottom of a flat print. A black piece will reflect the color of my hair when I am looking at it like a mirror. Although this is most always the "bottom" of the piece and will never be seen, it functions like a mirror.

Ok? So I need like 6 weeks from today. I only own uh like, 8 colors, most of them are transparent. Red Green Blue, Yellow Purple Orange, Black Grey Silver White (Glow in the Dark White). These caught my eye and I plan on purchasing normal people colors like dark green and blue and earthy colors and such. Solid not translucent, etc.

OK? So in this six weeks I'd need to learn more about modeling, unless you go to a 3d print website (free) and send me links of stuff you want printed (free) then I have to model it on my own, which is possible, but I love playing LID and I'm finally coming down off of my LID binge. It's been 6 weeks and I haven't played anything else.

So I'm not THAT full of shit, and it is definitely completely real and unstoppable, as I am about to be paying the invoice today (I've been putting it off for a week)

There's too many god damn options. If you know anything about videogame modelling, it's the exact same program, I use blender to model my videogame files and my 3d print files, so ... if you find video game meshes, I can print those, too. No guarantees though, I tried to print a soul gem from morrowind and ended up with a mess.
