Can you spend more for this?

You could check out this if you want to spend lower than your budget. It still has a 1080p IPS display, but the AMD E2 is a little weak. Fine for web browsing, watching movies and writing papers, but it may not suffice for heavier programs or a lot of multitasking.

If you're interested in budgeting, I would just suggest looking into the HP 14 for $200. It doesn't have much storage, but it will be more than powerful enough for your needs. It has an AMD E2 processor, 4gb of ram and a 32gb EMMC SSD. It would work fine for most multi-tasking, using office tools. I doubt it can handle much gaming unless it's not graphic intensive at all. It also has a full 1080p display, a pretty good battery life, and it's quite light at 3.9 pounds as well.

If you need more storage, I would suggest an SD Card, using external storage, or using cloud storage like icloud / onedrive / google drive.

I recently ordered about 20 Chromebooks for my school district. ASUS C201 11.6" units. Avoid that particular model. They are cheap, flimsy machines. Thank God we only need them for testing students.

As for compatibility, it's not too bad an OS. All general computing can be done on a Chromebook. You can also enable Android apps to run on them. There's even Word online, and other Office apps. The battery life is crazy though, 8-10 hours, even longer most of the time.

You don't need an external HDD, because most of them have SD card slots, or USB ports, so you can just buy her a nice 128GB USB flash drive and that'll hold all her schoolwork. I got one of those solid metal ones from Samsung, it'll last literally the rest of my life, lol.

You'll really just be able to browse the internet on that thing though, but if you're looking for a burner and just gonna do dnm stuff it'd be fine. You could also look into refurbs or picking up something off of craigslist. I really think a refurb might be your best bet as far as getting the most out of your money, but the laptop I linked above will work with tails.

Check out this laptop for the computer part. Also I recommend this antenna kit since it is very portable. A long as you are doing mostly digital modes, check out this SDR which may be all you need if 5 watts is ok. They have a 50W amplifier too that is pretty small if needed. Those three items are together less then half your budget :)

Are you sure you don't want to go with refurbished ? the best I can find as new is this HP 14-an013nr but even though it is very low budget I would consider that too weak, I would recommend refurbished, because you can get something like this Lenovo Thinkpad T420 because it is almost double the power, since it comes with Intel Core i5 2520M, 8GB, 320GB, Win 7 Pro

It has a 1080p screen, and for something in this price range, it's kind of rare. If you don't care about 1080p you could get a HP stream for under 200.

You could also buy a thinkpad laptop off ebay for about $100 but bear in my mind you will have to install you own OS, like linux. Usually they will come with 2gb of ram which the bare minimum i think for basic stuff.

Now of course I am just suggesting the cheaper options, there are better ones used or refurbished.

I can make a pretty good argument for why computers are rather necessary in today's society, and I can tell you you can get an older one for real cheap.
Any job you want more than a barebones service job can and is made miles easier by the use of computers. Every job you'll work with has a computer system in it, and learning how to fix the things, even a little bit, can help you immeasurably. Using a computer at home is the key to learning how to fix them when they break. And in particular it gets better if you take one on as a project.

Like, go find a laptop that doesn't work. Usually when it fails there's one part that failed. Identify it, and replace it, if it's a laptop, you'll need to know how to open the things. Not hard, but requires effort. You then need to make sure you get the exact part that failed for that model of computer. Amazon has tons of them. It might be kinda pricy, but not as expensive as a new one.

Once you build it, you'll probably need to install an OS. I recommend Ubuntu Linux, 'cause it's free and easy to get, plus it gives you serious nerd cred.

Even if you want to get a new one, it's useful.

I suggest a laptop, as they'll have a lower spacial and power footprint, plus you can take it with you.

There are videos on how to upgrade them to 8G of ram and add a larger ssd with other items from amazon. The keyboard isn't the greatest, it's not super fast, but it has a 1080p IPS screen, and you can always either use Macrium to clone the 32G drive to a larger one or do a fresh windows install. OpenSUSE also works with everything on the laptop.

I don't know what your budget is but I wanted to throw that out there. ( I also have a Dell XPS 15 with the 4k screen, with windows scaling everything looks nice and sharp)

Spend and extra $50 for an Ssd or HDD and you're set. The CPU is underpowered but it'll handle Web browsing fine. The main reason I'd suggest this laptop is that it has a 14" full HD IPS display, which is honestly the most important thing in a laptop if you're just browsing the Web.

I bought this cheap laptop because it has a 1080p screen and is easily upgradable. I put in an 8 gig sick of RAM and added an SSD. Check the reviews and it'll tell you how to do the upgrades.

It's an especially good deal because it happens to be easy to open and has room and a slot for an extra ssd.

I'm able to play Overwatch on pretty decent settings. The laptop comes with a beautiful display. And the e2 chip on it is surprisingly decent for performance. (Performance compared to other $180 laptops).
