Is it only to keep things cool, and only while driving? Have you considered a thermo electric cooler like this? You can plug it into the car 12V outlet and it keeps things cool. You can usually get a house adapter so you can cool it over night before your trip for even better performance

I believe I've also seen cigarette lighter powered coolers that use the thermoelectric effect (or something) to cool, so you don't need to keep buying ice.
