As others have said, if you can save a bit more you will have better options. Me personally I'm an iOS guy. You can get an iPad (Latest Model for $249 with 32GB Storage. Or if you were able to get your budget even higher you can get a latest model iPad for $329 on sale with 128GB Storage.

Probably not the first gen as those are ancient and terrible.

The tab As are kinda low end and weak, with not a lot of ram or storage, but they're about what you can find for that price. I mean for a kid they're okay I guess but they might be a bit slow and stuff. Never used one but I do have experience with lower end tabs with similarish specs.

The Tab 4 is also a pretty good tablet. It runs Android 7 as compared to the Zenpad 10's Android 6 based ZenUI

As far as Google apps go, it won't matter for long. I figure there is an 85% chance that the older HD8s will be at the same OS level within 6 months anyway. I don't know if the new OS will be flagged as banned by Google. This new OS does exist on the Fire TV, but I wasn't able to find anyone who said whether it affected anything.

My advice. DO NOT get an Amazon Fire tablet if Google is a primary criteria for you. It could go away at any point between Amazon and Google whims, so, get an authentic Android tablet to be sure. So is this the 7" Galaxy Tab A then? I think my dad has that and it's been fine for him but he doesn't game. I feel like depending on the games you plan on playing, it might be a bit tough with only 1.5G of RAM. At the same price point but with a bit more power, maybe consider the Lenovo Tab 4 instead (or a used ipad/surface 3)?
