I'm not an expert on the matter but I know the basics, hopefully I can help -

First, your last question - yes, a LOT of good music is still released on vinyl. Most records come with a digital download of some sort so if you want to collect vinyl but still have your iTunes library you can do so for minimal cost on top of what you'd already be paying for the digital music anyway.

For a full setup - you don't have to pay as much as some enthusiasts would lead you to believe you also can't expect to get a halfway decent sound out of $60 unit from Target that has built in speakers. At the very least you are looking at $150, and that's if you can make some awesome garage sale scores. If you want brand new equipment you are looking at at least $300-$400.

You will need a turntable, a pre-amplifier, a stereo receiver, and speakers. A lot of stereo receivers like this one have a built in phonograph pre-amp so if you want to knock out 2 birds with one stone go that route. For a turntable, just find something that has a replaceable cartridge (needle), has a stylus counterweight (to keep weight off your record), and is fairly heavy (weight = no vibration). Speakers aren't really hard to figure out - just find some unpowered speakers on Amazon that have a good rating. You don't need some ridiculous setup with a subwoofer and surround sound...two basic floor speakers will sound great.

If you can't afford all of that you can always just get a cheap turntable with USB output like this and some USB speakers like this. It won't sound amazing but it's plenty good enough for most people.

The speakers are actually integrated into the monitors, I suppose I should've placed the circles within the monitors. There's only 1 3.5mm audio in port for each monitor.
I already have 2 male-male 3.5mm cables, so if I were to get the cable you linked I'd be able to do it, right?

I'm no audiophile, but would a pair of [$10 USB speakers] (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-S150-Speakers-Digital-Sound/dp/B000ZH98LU) be that much of an improvement over integrated monitor sound?

How much is affordable? 100$? 1000$? Do you have speakers already?

$1000 option:

I'd actually suggest getting 6 (or 12) individual USB DACs (USB soundcards) such as these(Relatively cheap one from a known manufacturer):

http://www.amazon.com/Turtle-Beach-Advantage-Digital-Adapter/dp/B0036VO4X4/

You'll also need a 12 channel power amp. (or 6 small stereo amps).

Like 6 of these: http://www.amazon.com/Lepai-TRIPATH-TA2020-Stereo-Amplifier/dp/B003P534SW/

or one of these http://www.amazon.com/Dayton-MA1240a-Multi-Zone-Channel-Amplifier/dp/B003DKVZHQ/

$100 Option
If you don't have speakers already you use inexpensive (powered) computer speakers? If so you could get 6 pairs of these:

It might be a little trouble to send audio individually to each speaker - but should be doable with some hacking.

Since you asked me specifically for my help.

CPU- this is a very solid choice for gaming. The i5 is about where you'd want to be for a build this price a bump up to an i7 won't net you much but it'll be much more expensive. Also this is a locked CPU so you can't overclock but that's perfectly fine. It's a lot of trouble sometimes.

CPU Cooler- you don't have one, that's good since you're not overclocking. Stock cooler will work. Just a note for when you're building, do NOT power on the computer without the cooler installed.

Motherboard- Solid mATX board. I'm not sure why mATX but it doesn't matter. It makes for a smaller build which is useful if you want to hide it or whatever. Also you're not sacrificing much except for SLI/XFire which you don't need either. I'm not a big fan of mATX since I like the freedom of ATX, but that's personal preference.

Storage- Good harddrive from a reputable brand at a good price. There's always the question of SSDs. They're a massive quality of life improvement but have almost no impact on gaming. I have a SSD as my OS drive and it takes longer for the BIOS to POST than it does to load Windows 8. It'll be another $100 for a decent one. You can do it later, but you should reinstall. Don't buy into those imaging tools, Windows doesn't always like it despite the supposed bit by bit copying.

Video Card- Good choice, the GTX760 is really good price/performance wise, maybe even the best. EVGA has amazing customer service so good choice there as well.

Case- I would recommend that you get the Arc Mini because it has a compartment behind the motherboard that you can stick all your cables, that cable management you hear about all the time. Your build will look cleaner. It is significantly more expensive than the Design Core 1000, so I'll leave it up to you.

Power Supply - Good, nothing too exciting.

Optical Drive - Good, there's not much to say here either.

Operating System - Windows 8 is perfect.

Monitor - Here's where I would recommend something different. I've never hear of Hannspree before, I admit that may be my lack of experience but I think it may be one of those crappy knock of brands. I would go with this ASUS that's on sale currently. Solid quality and reliability.

Keyboard and Mouse - Here is where personal preference comes in force. These are what you'll be using to interact with your computer most of the time. I personally spent a good amount on a mouse and keyboard, but if you're a budget this is also one area where upgrading is super easy. That said, you have good choices my friend got that mouse for and he likes it.

Speakers - I have these Logitech speakers for my mom the quality is definite passable. However if you're gaming with headphones then this isn't an issue. Also I think the ASUS monitor may have speakers, I'm not completely sure.

Good luck! Any questions let me know here.

Just generally speaking, the cheapest way to do this that sounds decent is going to be to get a tiny set of bookshelf speakers from your local thrift store, a cheap as fuck amp on Amazon (disclaimer: mine came with a LED not working out of the box and I only used it for six months before upgrading, but it was more or less fine during that time), and some speaker wire. It's still going to be more bulky than a crappy set of powered speakers at a low price point, but they're gonna sound 1000x better.

u/hab136 · 2 pointsr/KerbalSpaceProgram

> but all that I've seen still require the speakers plugged into the jack.

Copy and paste from my other post: $11.53 USB speakers, don't need anything other than a USB port.

u/Captain_Midnight · 2 pointsr/buildapc

I changed the monitors to some slightly different ones that have better user ratings at Newegg; note that they do not have built in speakers, so you'll need some cheapies or some headphones to get sound.

Edit: Found some likely candidates.

If you're going cheap a pair of Logitech speakers will do the trick.

For $12 you can get these but don't expect much in the way of sound quality. Even if you aren't regularly using them for music you would easily be able to tell the difference between these and a pair of $30 speakers in games and movies.

Logitech S150
These are the first ones I came across. Doesn't look to be a whole lot out there.

Oo, happy 21! I got shut off from buying drinks at a bar during a FloBots concert for mine. :/ Don't light cigarettes backwards then laugh about it loudly! My under 21 prize are [new speakers] (http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-S150-Speakers-Digital-Sound/dp/B000ZH98LU/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_nS_nC?ie=UTF8&colid=2QHS7FUPJ2CON&coliid=I3CL1WQR1LQN1P) for my recently built gaming pc. I don't know anything about them or if they are good, but anything is better than nothing at this point.

Great to hear! I saw speakers similar to these: Logitech S150 USB Speakers with Digital Sound https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000ZH98LU/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_dYaOBb5FWRK26
at a thrift store yesterday. Would those work?

u/SpongeBad · 1 pointr/PS4

You can't use Bluetooth, but it does support USB audio so something like this: https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-S150-Speakers-Digital-Sound/dp/B000ZH98LU/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1496959756&sr=1-2&keywords=usb+speaker might work.

Warning: I have not tried anything like that, I just know that plenty of USB headsets work fine on the PS4.

  • Edit - initial speaker link I provided was just USB power, not USB audio.
u/tails_the_gay_fox · 1 pointr/PS4

Logitech has a pair of very cheap usb speakers that are said to work by some users on the ps4. https://www.amazon.com/Logitech-S150-Speakers-Digital-Sound/dp/B000ZH98LU

I doubt it will be much worse than the speakers in a laptop and you wont need to strip the audio off of hdmi in that case. It has to be usb speakers that receive audio from usb and not just powered by usb. I am going to see if my audio engine a2+ speakers will work on it. They show up as generic audio devices under every os I have used them in when using the usb dac.

Edit: the audio engine a2+ works so I assume anything that is a class complaint usb audio interface will work.
