If you are cutting right beside the stud Madison Electric makes old work boxes that screw into the studs, they are way better than old work boxes with the tabs for the drywall in my opinion as I've been re-wiring and even the ones behind my TVs are all the Madison ones.

It's screwed or nailed to the stud next to it. Cut them with an oscillating tool to remove that box. Replace it with a screw mount box like this. You'll most likely have to cut the drywall a bit, but so long as you trace the new box and only cut that portion out it's no worry. The wall plate will cover the hole
