This mini tripod, by far the best quality I’ve come across by some margin.

A lot depends on the style you're looking for. I'll also say that security in a bag is a myth. There are things to discourage certain behavior, but ultimately a bag should never be seen as a secure container. (after all it can always be cut)

What I chose.

I traveled for about a month in Europe staying in hostels. Even though it was only a month I could have traveled for about a year (adding only a tablet) with the bag/things I brought.

Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack - $150 (Discontinued)

[Osprey Farpoint 40 Travel Backpack

  • $160 (New Version)](https://smile.amazon.com/Osprey-Farpoint-40-Travel-Backpack/dp/B014EBM3KA/)

I love this bag but it might not be the single best option for you. It's low profile, turns into a duffle bag (more about that later) and although it doesn't look like a school backpack, it doesn't standout like this either.

The reason I love that it turns into a duffle bag is because theres a semi hidden velcro pocket in the bottom where the cover rolls into. This is a great place to sew or velcro a small zippered wallet or bag to store extra money or valuables. It's not secure as much as its hidden. This won't help you if they steal the whole bag, but it will help you if they just ransack the place and steal from the open compartments.

    Other Options

There are a ton of other options. I suggest watching the VagaBrothers Video - How to Choose the BEST Travel BACKPACK | Pros & Cons Minimalist Backpack Review and Travel Tips: Packing Hacks, Tips & Essentials

The F Stop bags look great, but are pretty pricy. Depending on what lenses you're bringing (18-55mm kit lens VS 70-200mm VR f2.8) it may or may not be worth it for size and configurability. I personally bought a Sony a6000 and left my big DSLR at home. That was actually a really good choice for the type of trip I did, but if I was going for a year (like you are) I understand needing the big camera. You might want to get camera/lens inserts like this (but not necessarily that one, I just clicked on the first one I saw on amazon) to store and protect those other lenses.

    Hope that helps.

The following is copy and pasted from an email I sent to family friends traveling abroad. It gives links and ideas for things that help when traveling minimally.

    ----------

  • 2 Mini cologne bottles - Well worth it if you are doing carry on only, or if you like to bring more than one scent with you. Depending on how much you use I find that a bottle filled up lasts about 1.5-2 weeks if you are using 2-3 sprays a day. http://smile.amazon.com/MagnaKoys%C2%AE-Perfume-Cologne-Sprayers-Overcaps/dp/B00UKHLBEW

  • World power adapter - http://smile.amazon.com/elago%C2%AE-Tripshell-TRAVEL-ADAPTER-Built/dp/B005AF0C2G Awesome adapter. A lot nicer than the 50 mini adapters you have to piece together like legos.

  • Power strip - https://smile.amazon.com/Monster-MP-OTG400-BK-Outlets/dp/B000F9YN2M I never used this. I wouldn't get it unless you knew you needed it. They are good ways to make friends at airports though, as plugs are always in high demand and few people will say no to letting you free up a plug or two.

  • Battery pack - (updated version) https://smile.amazon.com/Anker-PowerCore-20100-Capacity-Technology/dp/B00X5RV14Y/ OR https://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00Z9QVE4Q While there are cheaper and smaller ones, this is the perfect size and capacity if you are bringing a couple or more devices. This will charge a phone many times over. It's especially handy if you want to leave it charging in the hotel then bring it with you during the day after it's charged.

  • Compressed charcoal deodorizers - http://smile.amazon.com/Moso-Natural-Purifying-Deodorizer-Eliminator/dp/B0099K6OVQ Great to throw in shoes or bags that start to get smelly. Useful in hostels.

  • Microfiber towel - http://smile.amazon.com/Sunland-Microfiber-Compact-Sports-Towels/dp/B00MGGYZVG Very useful for hostels as most will charge you to use towels

  • Tripod - http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00D76RNLS/ paired with a phone mount (https://smile.amazon.com/AUKEY-Samsung-Smartphones-Adapter-Monopod/dp/B01LYN73TQ) this can be used to hold the phone on long flights. Really nice for watching movies on the plane or waiting for a train.

  • Roll up 1L water bottles - http://smile.amazon.com/dp/B00BI9AM3C/ Great for airplanes (no longer need to buy water after TSA).

  • I packed all of my clothes into cubes and a flat packer. http://smile.amazon.com/Eagle-Creek-Pack-It-Starter-Set/dp/B00F9S84D8

    ----

    Security:

Since I was traveling alone, and in hostels, security was a slightly bigger deal for me. I carried my passport on my person or locked in my hostel (many had lockers or metal lock boxes).

At all times I had a photo copy of my passport and everything in my wallet, some local currency, and a print out of all the embassies in the area. (Attached to this email.) I printed this double sided and had multiple copies with me.
I told my mom, "At any time I want to be able to have everything stolen, but still have a way back home.” My credit card will do cash transfers internationally and also includes a continuous travel insurance package.

I would highly suggest making three copies of your passport and all credit cards and other ID you are taking. One lives on your person when your passport is stored elsewhere (hotel, for example), one lives in your luggage (preferably hidden/tucked away), and one stays with a trusted friend or family member that will be in the States for the duration of your trip. If anything happens they will be able to assist with proving your identity to the State Department, thus speeding the process along. I suggest keeping some cash tucked in your passport (along with that embassy list), your copy of the passport in the luggage, and then the copy of the passport and embassy list in your wallet. At this point you have three possibilities of things to grab to prove your identity/pay for a cab/tell you where to go.

While this may seem a little overboard, I find it doesn't take that long to set up and helps greatly should anything bad happen. Also consider registering with the State Department. This helps them track Americans abroad should anything happen, and also gives you alerts, should anything happen. https://step.state.gov/step/

    Tech Tips

I also used a service called Line2 to give me a US phone number to call from and receive calls to while I was away. I have T-Mobile that gives me included unlimited international data. As long as I had a 4g signal, I also had a phone I could make and receive calls on. Google Voice and Skype would also do this. Do be aware of how much international data costs. Wifi is easy to find, but I suggest using a VPN on your phone or laptop for any web surfing. And even with the VPN I would not suggest logging into any financial (bank, etc) while abroad unless you are on a trusted wifi network (aka, friends).

For maps you can download parts of Google Maps by searching the city and clicking “Download." This should work on Android and iOS versions of Google Maps.

I've got the Manfrotto Pixi and it's pretty nice

I shoot portraits but arguably the three most important things for a good shot in general is:

  1. Have a solid tripod, weigh it down if you have to. If you cant afford a good one or dont wanna carry around a big one, i recommend the Manfrotto Mini. The more stable your tripod the better your long exposures will be, which leads to:

  2. Learn your exposure triangle if you dont know it already. drop your ISO to a manageable level and try to get as much light as possible out of the analog options first, so drop that shutter speed to 1s or 2s (which is why the tripod comes in handy) and open your aperture as wide as possible (the lower the number the better, i usually shoot at f2). Finally, if its still too dark slowly raise your ISO until the image resolves well, you dont want too grainy of a photo from in camera sensor processing.

  3. Have a decent prime lens! Whether your goal is to shoot landscape or portraits a prime lens will always be cheaper in quality than an equivalent image quality zoom lens, this is because its easier to build a static lens with good glass than it is to build a lens that zooms in and out with good glass due to distortion. All of my photos are shot at 55mm and 85mm, but landscape peeps tend to use everything from 35mm to 14mm primes for their shots.

    Hope that helps!
u/blahdre · 4 pointsr/SonyAlpha

i use one of these on my travels: https://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-MTPIXI-B-PIXI-Tripod-Black/dp/B00D76RNLS

they're super useful and i've taken many long exposures with it.

u/h8fulgod · 3 pointsr/backpacking

I backpack routinely with cameras. I've find the following indispensable:

Neoprene case for camera and lens (this is just an example, but these are great to wrap your camera in and then it doesn't matter what bag it is in): https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00GP34IF4/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_w.D7AbTPJG9Y8

Small sturdy tripod: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D76RNLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_KaE7AbDC2BFP9

u/jimlaheyandrandy · 3 pointsr/SonyAlpha

For $25 you can get this awesome little travel tripod which I carry everywhere. If you're looking for something a bit bigger but still light, the Mefoto series are all pretty good.

Not sure what you're looking for in terms of a lens, but your kit lens is probably your best bet for a travel lens. If you want a good, cheap lens with fast aperture, check out the Sigma 30mm f1.4 or the Sony 50mm f1.8 OSS.

u/Sluisifer · 3 pointsr/malefashionadvice

A full-size tripod would be great, but the little ones are really useful, too:

http://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-MTPIXI-B-PIXI-Tripod-Black/dp/B00D76RNLS

They're wonderful for travelling, too.

u/nickdallas · 3 pointsr/photography

Can you take the head off your tripod and thread your camera directly into the tripod head mounting screw? Or maybe just buy a quick mounting plate like this or even a Manfrotto Mini Tripod. None of them are ideal, but they might be able to get you usable shots without having to shell out so much money for a mounting plate.

u/lnxmachine · 2 pointsr/photography

They make really small tripods that will hold it really close to the ground.

u/Magnus919 · 2 pointsr/travelphotography

Do you need it to be of conventional height? No, really, do you need that?

I travel with a [Manfrotto Pixi](Manfrotto PIXI Mini Tripod, Black (MTPIXI-B) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D76RNLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_TefYCbJQX7TJB). It’s smaller than a water bottle. Meant to stand on a desk, rock, tree stump, log, etc. I’ve had no problem with it holding up a Fujifilm X-T2 with heavy glass (vintage tele lenses with focal reducer). I usually travel with nothing more than a 30L carry on bag so I put a high value on using small things, or even (often) going handheld.

u/miseryshusband · 2 pointsr/Bowling

In practice session I video myself. Bought one of these with a cell phone adapter ($3-$10). There are cheaper ones but this one is solid as a rock and I don't worry about my cell phone falling over.

u/geekandwife · 2 pointsr/Beginning_Photography

I have one, and rarely use it. Its used as a flash stand more often than it is used to hold my camera. I will use it for video for times when I can't take a tripod, but find them relatively useless.

https://www.amazon.com/Manfrotto-MTPIXI-B-PIXI-Tripod-Black/dp/B00D76RNLS as a mini tripod is almost always more useful

u/Dann-Oh · 2 pointsr/SonyAlpha

Check out the Monfrotto Pixi Mini if about $17 on amazon right now. I love this tripod for my A7iii.

u/shmi · 2 pointsr/photography

I'd swap the 50mm for another lens if you have one, since you already have that focal length covered. I'd just bring a longer prime or zoom lens if you have one - if not, don't worry about it. I'd throw in a small tripod like this or similar just in case.

Insect repellent and maybe a small flashlight. Never forget insect repellent if venturing out into nature in warmer months. I forgot it once at the beach, at night, taking milky way photos. Figured I'd be OK, and came home with 37 (I counted them) mosquito bites on my legs. I wanted to take a cheese grater to my legs for days. :P

u/DrBaggio · 2 pointsr/nebulaprojectors

u/SnarkMasterRay · 2 pointsr/Disneyland

If you want to shoot at night you'll want a tripod as well. I've heard good things about this one (note five out of five stars on almost 800 reviews) but I've got an older one which is a bit smaller I still use as it fits in my bag better. A tripod will be essential for good night shots, and you may want to start paying attention to garbage cans and railings as set-up spots if you use the small ones. I generally carry a regular one around with me and just lock it rigid when folded so the handle can hook over my bag strap and I can walk without carrying it. I've got pretty good at entering and leaving rides with it and generally am no slower than anyone else and haven't had any problems with it other than Star Tours (I just hold it between my legs).

u/whythisname · 2 pointsr/videography

What phone do you have? If it's a recent gen iPhone, or something with a comparable camera. You could get FiLMiC Pro for Apple or Android ($10). For the VideoMicro I'd recommend a case that allows you to mount a mic and lights. Such as an iOgrapher filmaking case (~$60). They mostly make cases for iPhones, but they have at least one that is universal. Next would be a tripod, and I'd recommend the Joby GorillaPod (~$20) or the Manfrotto Mini Tripod (~$25)

u/KAYAWS · 2 pointsr/AskPhotography

Manfrotto Mini Tripod and Pedco UltraPod are the 2 that are about the same size.

There are several more conventional tripods that are made for travel and fairly small, but that would depend on your budget.

I have literally spent years searching for a good bracket for macro(ish) photography. I spend a lot of time trying to photograph salamanders/frogs/snakes in the wild.

I will likely try this flash next spring (or the newer model of it).

I built several of my own brackets over the years, including one like you're suggesting (it's too heavy to handhold for very long). I had best luck using a tripod collar to mount my flash atop my lens with a small ball joint tripod head.

Nowadays I just take out a little mini Manfrotto tripod to help hold my camera and move the flash around (on a flash cord) by hand. I really have my fingers crossed that the above-linked flash will be suitable for my needs when herping season kicks off again next year.

Oh, if wildlife is farther away (birds/mammals), I use a Better Beamer with my 430EXII in the hotshoe and skip brackets all together.

u/UglyPineapple · 1 pointr/photography

I abuse the heck out of my Manfrotto Pixi. My favorite thing about it is the mini ball head.

u/vashette · 1 pointr/photography

Has anyone tried the Manfrotto Pixi Mini? It has really good reviews on Amazon. It would be for a small hiking tripod to support a 5D + a pound of lens on top of rocks and such. This seems like it has more control than the classic beanbag.

You can point this tripod about 75-80 degrees up without it flipping over. I've never used it for astrophotography but with a remote shutter release I think it will work pretty well!

u/ProfDrCmdrChang · 1 pointr/videography

They do make microphones that plug directly into the Lightning port (like the Shure MV88 or Rode VideoMic Me-L). They won't be perfect but they're an improvement. You mentioned that you're live streaming on Facebook, so unfortunately that does limit your options quite a bit since you aren't editing after the fact.

If you absolutely need to use a gimbal, you can simply slot your phone in so that the Lightning port is on the outside of the gimbal arm. If your gimbal has trouble balancing with the microphone you can use coins or washers as a makeshift counterweight.

Otherwise, if you don't need to use a gimbal you can use a mini tripod which will still help you stabilize your shots. Popular examples are the Manfrotto Pixi or the Joby Gorillapod. No balancing issues here.

u/Jahmay · 1 pointr/videography

What exactly are you trying to do with it? How about this or this?

Hi Sabinkie,

I am extremely new to photography in general so I would not be able to give you too much advice regarding specific lenses but I the kit 14-42mm lens to be more than sufficient for my needs at the moment. I am finding myself wanting a more wide angle lens for landscape and one which has a heavier zoom but, all in all, the kit lens is good for my purposes and I imagine would give a good base to gauge your needs.

As I have had it such a brief period of time (and have had a particularly stressful week!), I can't give you much advice regarding shooting in low light but I can take it somewhere dark and take a few shots if you think that may help you? In the mean time, I'll PM you a few landscape shots I took on one of my few outings.

Side note, it seems absolutely perfect for traveling, it is so tiny and it comfortably fits into small bags. I have also bought a tiny Manfrotto tripod which I'll be taking on my holiday next month along with the camera!!

Hope this helps!

u/byzantinedavid · 1 pointr/flashlight

Most 18650 lights are going to be a bit big for easy pocket carry depending on the pocket.

The Emisar D4 is the new hotness, but it has been pointed out that it's an advanced-user light.

I would also recommend a DGQ Tiny if you're insistent on 18650 and need a smaller light for pocketting. Lots of people do carry larger lights. The base 18650 is the Convoy S2+ and since you can get an 18350 tube for it to make it smaller, that's my recommendation if you're not used to carrying a light.

For the car, I'd go with the BLF Q8. It's floody, but it has so much light that the throw is great too. It also has great runtime, and if you get a cheap mini tripod You can set it and aim it when changing a tire or w/e.

u/octopusbarber · 1 pointr/GooglePixel

You're already doing what most don't by getting out there and shooting, so that's a step in the right direction.

I'd wait on the gimbal / stabilization and look into the tripod and Moment gear first. In fact Moment is running a site wide 20% off sale right now if you go here: http://mbsy.co/jtcHM

And I can recommend this little tripod. It's awesome.

Tripod: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D76RNLS/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_qkyhAbVKBA1KJ
