Ah I relate to this so much as I am Vietnamese, and in Vietnamese culture you sleep with 1 blanket on a bamboo mat. In American culture you have this fitted sheet thing that goes on the mattress, a flat sheet that goes between you and the top layers, a thin blanket, then a puffy layer that can be a duvet or comforter. There's an optional decorative blanket/quilt thing if you want to get real fancy. If you get real cold, you can stack on more blankets! Do you live in the US? If so, I would recommend Marshalls or TJ Maxx for affordable comforter sets and blanket (I currently use microfiber blankets).
