This appears to have pretty positive reviews.

You're probably aware of this, but the laptop is significantly higher resolution than the tv and as a result will probably not have a great picture on the television.

I assume by an AV1 input you mean RCA (as in Yellow/White/Red)? The best bet would be a Mini Displayport to RCA adapter (also gives you the option of S-Video) as shown here: http://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Composite-Video-S-Video-Converter/dp/B004VV8R86

By "DIN hookups" I'm assuming you meant S-Video.

Tada?

Not sure what model MacBook you have, but this should work just fine:

Apple TV wouldn't help anyway, then.

Maybe this: http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B004VV8R86

The connection type you want to end up with is called "composite" (assuming you mean the old yellow video cable red/white audio cable). But either that or S-Video, you want something like this: http://www.amazon.com/DisplayPort-Composite-Video-S-Video-Converter/dp/B004VV8R86

I don't think you can directly connect from Displayport to SCART (displayport being the only one available on the Surface Pro).

What should probably work is converting the Displayport to S-video, and convert that to SCART. You can buy adapters for those. The first one is the most crucial one - and the most pricy one - but see for example here (I have no clue if that's a good one, just illustrating they exist). Going through HDMI is also possible (You'll need a mini DP to HDMI cable then, too, but those are plentiful and don't loose any quality).

(Note that the direction matters a lot, because it has to actively convert the signal. SCART to HDMI is very different from HDMI to SCART).

Is that worth the price? I'd say not. You'll be spending a decent chunk of change for the converters - and although the converter should work, the further apart the technologies are, the bigger the chance that something goes wrong and ends up not working. It will certainly not work as smooth as modern TV's will.

It'll also probably not look very good, relatively. That would depend a lot on your TV, of course, but chances are it won't have as good a resolution. That does depend on the TV's model (what model is it, by the way?). If it's a really big HD one, it might be worth a try. However, "dumb", relatively big, modern HD tv's aren't that expensive, and they'll probably give a much better picture with less hassle.

The problem is much the same for any device you can buy that "converts" it into a smart TV - the modern ones will most likely also come with Displayport or HDMI only.
